Wines go in fashion, which is a shame. About 15 years ago, Pinot Grigio was the up-and-coming wine and Chardonnay was on its way out.

I happen to like Merlot and Zinfandel a lot myself, but I don't take much notice of fashion.

From what I've read, Merlot is considered by some to be boring, one-dimensional, and without character. Some also consider it to be a cheap, mass-produced product that doesn't really mean anything to have... it isn't "high class" enough.

I've also been told that when ordering wine it's easier to "go wrong" with Merlot. There are other reds like Cabernets that are a sure thing in the sense that even if you are buying without having tried there's a better chance it will be nice.
