It's not just mental conditions that become "fashionable." Any medical or psychiatric condition with nonspecific symptoms can become the "disease of the week" if it gets enough media play, and the phenomenon is not new. It's very similar to "medical student syndrome," in which people studying a particular disorder begin to experience its symptoms. (Personal note: This happened to me a couple of times during my years as a medical transcriptionist.)

The reasons for people choosing to "wear" different medical/psychological "fashions" are varied. Some people actually have the condition in question. Some (like the med students) are afraid they *might* have the condition. Others seek the diagnosis to gain some external benefit (secondary gain). Regardless of the reason, publicity surrounding a particular condition will lead to an increase in the number of people complaining of its symptoms.

I guess, the mental illness are more treatable now and there are more awareness. So people are more likely to accept and get the treatments in order to make their lives better, instead of suffering silently. I don't agree that it is a fashion.
But, it is sad that so many people are not getting the treatments they are supposed to get because of the prejudices.

Oh! I forget to mention that Bipolar is having manic attacks and depression attacks for the same person. At the manic period, the person feels like he/she can do anything in the world and so energetic that they can't even sleep.
During the depressive periods, they have no energy, feeling sad, suicidal and all.Medicine for depression will make the manic attack more severe. So it is necessary to identify and treat it according to the situation.
Sorry, if I confuse you
