OPEN THREAD: Florida Senator Mel Martinez Resigns

In a familiar turn of events Mel Martinez announced his resignation today, citing that it's time to return to his family.

Seeing as how he's not the first Republican politician to step down suddenly this year, I have to ask what the heck is going on? Thoughts on this new popular trend?

I'm getting mixed messages; "spending more time with the family" is a phrase that seems to be used as a smoke screen, or is he resigning to be available to run for another position?
