This is just my point of view on how I see America as it is. I've been there for a few months only and this is just based on what I have observed. I think this medications or over medications is due to consumerism.

Anybody who experienced the life in America will be overwhelmed by all the things that you can buy from clothes, cars, nice houses, shoes, etc. And the food are plenty and affordable too. People are working hard to keep their standard of living. You have plenty of credit cards, but Americans have to work hard in order to keep up.

Due to these pressures many relationships suffer. Because of too much time spent working some relationships were not able to last. I have an American friend and she just broke up with her boyfriend and she told me she'd rather live with a dog than a person because people leave but dogs don't. I think this is sad. Some who are not able to cope will go into depression so they go to a doctor, a psychiatrist and they are given anti depressants.

There are some who try to cope up with depression through eating so they become obese and have to take medications for diabetes. The food in America are very cheap. You can buy a lot without costing too much so you can also consume a lot leading to again, obesity and health-related problems. So you consult a doctor and again the doctor will prescribe medicines.

That is why pharmaceutical companies are mushrooming everywhere because there are plenty of demands.

The "American way" often involves taking short cuts.
Instead of getting to the root of the problem and taking the time to find a simple and timeless solution, we just do what it takes to treat the symptoms. Also, if the root problem is never fixed, people have to keep buying medication, and the health industry prefers making money through interdependency than through being innovative and productive.
