Prescription - Imitrex (expensive)

Non-prescription - Excedrin Migraine

When they are really bad though, I take one Tylenol, one Advil, drink a soda (caffeine) and eat a piece of chocolate.

If I could possibly have a cold or sinus congestion contributing, I will substitute the Tylenol with Benadryl Sinus

I know it sounds crazy, but it works like a charm!

Yeah that's funny, chocolate and caffeine both trigger migraines for me, too!

Yeah, I know.

My Doctor said that the studies form the 70's (I think) indicated that caffeine was a trigger for some people and that the amines in chocolate were a trigger for others as well as the nitrates in hot dogs, sausages and lunch meat.

Luckily, I am not one of those people, I can eat chocolate and cheese (two foods containing highest levels of amines) to my hearts content.

However, if cheese or chocolate trigger migraines for you then you definitely couldn't use my home remedy.

I have had migraines since grade school, seen numerous doctors and had a ton of tests... I've tried everything.

Usually if I can catch it in the aura stage, I'll be okay.

If you find a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon or physical therapist who uses a microcurrent machine, have them run the wands from the base of your head down your neck and also lay them on your temples...sounds weird, but it works

Based entirely on personal experience, I would have to say Feverfew, a non-prescription herbal supplement. If taken at the first sign of a migraine, it can drastically reduce the pain and other accompanying symptoms (nausea, photosensitivity, etc). If I catch it early enough, I can reduce an impending migraine to a dull pain on one side of my head. Feverfew is inexpensive and readily available at most drug stores, and used as an as-needed treatment (not a preventative supplement) I've never experienced a side effect.

One of the most prescribed medications is Imitrex, either in injectable or pill form. It's been around for years. Depending on your type of migrane headache, it may or may not be the best (obviously check with a doctor). You might also consider the following websites:

From what I've gathered, migraines themselves vary from person to person so the best treatment will vary also (case in point, the answerer that drinks caffeine -- it helps them, but it would make mine worse).

My personal method? As soon as I start seeing an aura, I take three Advil. If I do it early enough, it makes it far more manageable, though doesn't keep it off completely. I only get them once in a while though, so I don't have a severe case. The problem with trying new methods is that if one of them doesn't work, you have to deal with a full-on migraine. Not fun.

Be careful which prescription migraine medications (as well as Excedrin Migraine) you take then, as many contain caffeine.

Yeah I'll definitely look out for that... I think I am in the minority when it comes to caffeine helping/hurting migraines. Also, that list of food you found is quite extensive, that's a lot of potential migraines!! Luckily, I can confidently say that almost none of those are triggers for me.

Headache home remedy #1 - Aromatherapy

This is one of the most powerful of the headache home remedies. It's somewhat different for everyone, because everyone associates different types of smells with different things. However, there are some aromas that stand out from the crowd as headache killers: peppermint, sandlewood (my favourite), lavender, and eucalyptus. Try each of these, and combinations. Use essential oils for massage, or use candles or soaps.
Be careful – many companies sell products with these names now that are cheap and may only make your headache worse. Start with quality items, which means the purest essential oils you can find.

Try this – make a compress by putting 5 drops of lavender essential oil in cold (or warm) water. Swish around a soft cloth, then put it on your head or neck. (Incidentally, this is a recipe from the excellent Aromatherapy For Dummies® by Kathi Kaville. She gives great unbiased advice when it comes to what to buy and who to trust).

Headache home remedy #2: Exercise

We all know that regular exercise helps us cope with pain. It's especially effective for people with migraine. Some even find that mild exercise during a migraine helps alleviate the pain. Remember, though – ease into it! Sudden changes can make your migraine worse, and that isn't what we're going for here! :-)
Try: 1/2 hour walk a day, or a brisk walk outdoors when you get a headache.

Exercise can also help release the body's natural painkillers, endorphins.

Headache home remedy #3: Massage

Now that you've got your essential oils, this is another great thing to do with them! Not only does massage stimulate and relax, touch itself is one of the greatest healers.
Try this: with or without peppermint, eucalyptus or lavender oil: Have someone kneed across your shoulders and the back of the neck. Next, have them press on the base of your skull with their fingers, and slowly release.

This you can even do yourself: rotate your fingers over your scalp. Put pressure on the webbed part of your hand between your finger and thumb (really). Also great for migraine, believe it or not, is foot massage. Massage is a skill that may change your life. There are some excellent books out there, and one of the best is Massage Made Easy (one of the best headache home remedies) by Mario-Paul Cassar, which contains excellent self-massage too.

Headache home remedy #4: Heat and cold

For some people with headache it's one, with some it's another. Experiment, but avoid extremes, which can make things worse! Try a cold pack wrapped in a couple layers of towel on your neck. One of my favourites is putting your hands in hot water, which seems to pull the pressure out of your head. It's also a good excuse to do the dishes before your headache gets much worse! :-)

Believe it or not, Change in diet is the best medication.

This is according to Ayurveda, oldest medicine system and is becoming increasingly popular. The ayurvedic medicines have zero side effects.

First thing in the morning, take 1 ripe banana. Peel it, chop it into pieces, and add 1 teaspoon warm ghee, 1 teaspoon date sugar, and a pinch of cardamom on top. This is delicious and has helped many in reducing migraines.

The following changes in life style, will help in the prevention. Prevention is better than cure, Right?
Avoid Direct Sun - Do Nature walks - hot oil head massage - Yoga(Moon Salutation) - Cooling Pranayama

Meditation is the best cure for migraine. You don't need to take any medications because they only act as a temporary relief for your pain.

When you start meditating your nerves will be cleansed and all impurities removed. This way you will get rid of all kinds of diseases including migraine.
