May the 4th be with you. What is the origin of Star Wars Day?

Great question!
Basically May 4th became known as Star Wars Day due to the pun of the movie series familiar phrase "May the Force be with you," with replacing Force with 4th ((MAY the FO-u-Rce be with you).
Also worth mentioning that thanks to an internet meme, May 5th will be considered "I will have Revenge of the 5th", another play with words of 5th replacing and sounding like Sith.

What would be the proper way to celebrate these two holidays?
I can see myself watching all the episodes, but what kind of food would I serve?
Are costumes mandatory?
um, watch star wars movies, read some SW books, play some SW video games, (off the top of my head...getting rushed out the door)
Great thanks!
