Look at the photo below. You can clearly see the difference between "matte" and "gloss" screens. (Left in both is "matte" and right in both is "glossy").
"Matte" is a form of style which doesn't reflect light but often has a grainier look. They are good for open spaces as they do not cause "reflections" on the screen, a recurring problem. Personally, the general look is dull and not colourful and pleasing.
"Gloss" is a form of style which can reflect light but has a shiny surface and a vibrant colourful look. It doesn't always reflect and personally, I would recommend purchasing the "Gloss" version.
