Mark Messier has come out of retirement as an assistant for the New York Rangers and was GM for the Canadian World Championship Team ...
Team Canada got eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the first time in 8 years, and the New York Rangers didn't even make the NHL playoffs for the first time in 5 years. What do you think is the problem? Is his tough, no-nonsense approach effective anymore? Is it the team and Messier trying to get used to each other? Is he taking on too many responsibilities at one time? Should he take up a different vocation, like fishing?

I think there are some people who are simply not good at certain aspects of a job, even if they have been in involved in the sport in a wide variety of ways before now. Perhaps Messier’s personality just does not translate well to the current job he holds. Maybe his ability to evaluate other players’ talent levels and abilities simply is not up to snuff when comparing him to other general managers in hockey.
Some of the best players in the world in every sport have turned around and been some of the worst members of upper management. It’s also hard to give a definitive view on Mark Messier’s quality of job performance because there are factors like perhaps the coaches are simply bad, or the players have talent, but are not playing well together.
