@tchachra,
I personally have not had this breed of dog, but I did some snooping around on groups and blogs to get an idea of their temperament.
I did run across people in the dog world who think that it's hard to tell since it is a design 'mix' of two different specific breeds of dog.
1/2 Maltese x 1/2 Shih Tzu.
Whenever you get into breeding two separate breeds, you'll have to rely more on the temperaments of the immediate parents to really get an idea on the emotional stability of the puppy.

From looking at some of the issues on the links posted, the people seem to have what any typical pet owner will run into with training and issues.
(the last link describes a mal-shi as half husky and chow... shouldn't they be calling it a 'chusky'?)
As long as you get your dog from people who can tell you about the parents temperament and you can see the family first hand... you should be fine.
If you scour the pound and humane society, you're sure to find unique mix of dog that is in a more dire need of a home, and just as cute!
Caution: cuteness intensifies when mud is added.

Coat
The coat of the Mal-shi is typically long, straight, and dense. They may or may not have a double coat.
Overview
The Mal-shi, also called the MalteTzu, is created by the crossing of two breeds: Maltese and Shih Tzu. They are commonly referred to as "designer dogs" and have become popular companions.
Character
Sturdy, well-built, and compact, the Mal-shi is agile and lively. They exhibit a keen expression and hardy appearance.
Temperament
The ideal Mal-shi is affectionate, loving, and devoted. They should be playful, spunky, and clever. They do best in a home with older, considerate children. They generally do well with dogs and non-canine pets. Mal-shi's are wary and suspicious of strangers and are quick to alert their family to visitors and out of the ordinary sounds.
Care
The Mal-shi requires daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling. Bathing should be done when necessary using a mild shampoo. The ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection. Dental hygiene is important to prevent early tooth loss. They may be prone to such health issues as slipped stifle, skin problems, eye and respiratory problems, and spinal disc disease.
Training
Early socialization and obedience are recommended. The Mal-shi may be stubborn and difficult to housebreak. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency.
Activity
The Mal-shi is well suited for apartment living provided they are sufficiently exercised and mentally stimulated. They are able to meet the majority of their exercise needs indoors but enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions, and off-lead play time in a securely fenced yard.
Ownership
If you are looking for Mal-Shi - Malshi puppies for sale from reputable Mal-Shi - Malshi breeders or to adopt a Mal-Shi - Malshi from a Mal-Shi - Malshi rescue then make sure you understand as much about the dog breeds you are interested in as you can. Does anyone have a Mal-Shi breed dog?
Trying to figure out how they are with kids, family, birds, etc? Kids really want one due to size and cute factor...I just want to make sure they are good around large families. We also have a Cockatiel and thus want to know if anyone has seen them around birds.....

They all say that these dogs have a lot of spunk and personality.
Must say that thick coat looks like you might want to but stock at the dog groomers...but hey, very adorable :)
Best of luck to you - Woof.
