According to John Wagner of This Old House:
"When added to an existing forced-air heating system, central air for a 2,000-square-foot home costs $3,500 to $4,000 and can be done by two technicians in two to three days, often with little or no change to the ducting.
For a house that needs ducts, the costs and work time double. But a contractor experienced in retrofitting can cleverly hide ductwork behind walls, in the back of closets and up in the attic with minimal cuts into walls and the ceiling and very little mess."
So that means that you are looking at spending about $8,000 for central air.

What's the average cost to install central air into a home that doesn't have it?
My fiancee and I are looking at buying a 100 year old Victorian home, but it doesn't have central air conditioning, just an attic fan. It's about 1800 square feet, but it seems about next to impossible to get straight up pricing for something like this online.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks from me. It's infuriating when no one will even give you a ballpark figure for a job. You don't know if it's worth asking for estimates or not.

It will be difficult to do quotes online, and frankly I'm not sure that I would trust someone who gave me a quote on line in your case. The house you have is special. It's not a standard ranch. In your case, I would definitely call at least three different companies, and I would ask them to come and look at the house before giving a quote.
