Cleaning is essential since the summer tends to make baseboard heaters a home for spiders and other insects....brushing and vacuuming will get rid of all of that and avoid the burning smells when you turn them on for the first time.

How do you prepare electric baseboard heaters for winter use?
I recently moved from an apartment to my first house. The primary heat in this house is electric baseboard heaters. These heaters have been in use by the previous owners. In my area, winters tend to be lengthy, but moderate. I have not winterized a house by myself, so I am looking for advice.
My primary need, though, is what do I need to do to these heaters before starting them for the first time later this fall. I am expecting the basics of ensuring there is no furniture touching it and dusting the units. One good thing I need is any advice on the best means of cleaning them.

I would take a brush to them with a vacuum cleaner in tow. Scrub the baseboards down and suck up the gunk.....simple. Make sure you have disconnected the power of the heater and or disabled the circuit all together. Better safe then sorry. I tried to select your answer as the best. But it seems that I was doing that during the site-wide freak out earlier this afternoon. It seems to have somehow recorded a non-existent answer as the best answer and it will not let me select your answer.
I am sorry,
