Heat a single room : all the time, or as needed?
I have a basement office that on any given day I may not use at all. Is it better to use the programmable thermostat to never let it go below a certain number (say, low 60's), or just turn it off when I'm not using it? Normally I'd think just turn it off, but on those days when I need it, man, it's painful to listen to the furnace chug for hours while that one room tries to rise in temperature 20 degrees or so. I thought maybe the energy needed to keep it from dipping below a certain temp, where it only has to work intermittently, might be better.
