Bathtub pipe clogged

My bathtub pipe is clogged.

I'm stumped on this one. I have a buzz cut. I had no drainage problem when I left the apartment on Christmas eve at all. Today was the first time I took a shower in it, and when I tell you it's clogged, I mean it's CLOGGED. When I came home two hours after my shower, about the same amount of water was still in the tub.

Then I thought I thought filling up the bath tub with water might unclog the clog. Three hours after filling the tub most of the way, it is now half-filled with water with what I would estimate to be 20% of the water being drained.

I'd like to solve this problem without calling my landlord, because I stuck a bar into the wall for a pull-up bar and it doesn't look nice and I don't want them to see it.

Any ideas?

If you do not want to use a commercial product like Drano (as mentioned above) or some other terribly caustic substance, you can use the following natural method.

Pour 3/4 cup baking soda down the drain
Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain
Cover the drain immediately *
Wait 30 minutes
Remove the plug
Slowly pour hot water down the drain **

*These are the same ingredients used by children at science fairs, the interaction of the two will cause a “mini volcano” that will come up and out of the drain.

** Boil water with a tea kettle, saucepan or coffee pot.

• This is simultaneously the greenest and least expensive solution. It wasn't an option for my massively filled tub, but for a tub/sink/toilet with an extremely small amount of standing water, leaving this mixture in for even an hour or more would do wonders!! Very nice!!

Yes, my Grandmother taught me this right after I got my first place ;) I've been using it ever since. It works very well as a preventative measure too.

Humans lose hair at an alarming rate, even with your buzz cut there are all sorts of sources of hair.

Drano is good and will work, and will also be good for preventative maintenance if you shave a lot in the shower.

Still be VERY careful when using it. Don't let it come in contact with water while it's still in the jug it came in!

I use tweezers and have fish all sorts of stuff out of show drains. Just poke about and you will be pretty surprised with what you can pull out using simple tweezers.

The fact that you were gone and the system had a long time to dry could be a part of it. As long as hair is wet, water can run through a lot easier. Once it drys, it cakes, and even though you are running water through it, it will still cake. In my years and many clogs of experience, the situation you have described might need the services of a plumber. Before that, I would try Drano or another brand of opener. Get the Gel, wait until the water drains to the bottom, and then pour the whole container in. I know it says use "this much", but pour the whole container in. It will probably say "wait one hour and then wash hot water down the drain". Instead wait three or four hours before you wash it out. I opened our sink using this procedure about two months ago. However, I had a tub that was also very slow and using this procedure did not work, even after several tries. I had to call my plumber who opened it with a snake. If you want to try yourself, you can buy a snake at a hardware store. It's not that hard, but imagine someone installing their operating system who has never done it. Maybe they can, but it's a lot less aggravating to get a professional to do it.

I personally wouldn't use a snake in an apartment... as you have no idea the type of clog or where the clog is located and the type of snake you could rent/purchase would be a small diameter non-motorized one that is cranked by hand and these should not be used in wide pipes, because they can get tangled.

This is a good point. When I was an apartment manager, we used a plumber who was familiar with our complex.

There are small plastic snakes would I think can be appropriately used in an apartment.

I would use a small cheap plastic snake and a toilet plunger. They have permanently solved my clogged bathtub problems. If these don't fix your problem then it is up to the landlord to bring in a plumber and use a "real" snake.

I have put gallons of Drano and the like down my drains and I have not found them to be particularly effective.

You know what ?

Just for the hell of it , **try a plunger see if that works.**
(A new one preferably (one that hasn't come in contact with your toilet))

And poor some boiling hot water down the drain like cyberangel mentioned above.

Just a thought.

I've had the same thing happen to me, my brothers a barber this actually happens quite alot ;0)

Old trusty.
