The lighthouses all along the Eastern Seaboard have a rich history, but the ones in Maine have become the most popular, with the traditional architecture and great stories that accompany them. One cannot think about Maine without thinking about a lighthouse perched on a cliff.
My trip this fall to watch the beautiful foliage change color on the East Coast, would not be complete without a great lighthouse tour.
There are more than 70 lighthouses dotting the Maine coastline.
If I had to pick only one to visit on my trip, I would pick Owl's Head. It is considered to be the most haunted lighthouse in the state.
The keeper's house is said to be haunted by an old sea captain, but the main lighthouse is haunted by a dog!

A second tale is that of a keeper's dog who lived in the lighthouse in the 1930's. The dog, named Spot, was trained to pull on the fog bell's rope when he heard a boat approaching. In one incident, the rope was buried in the snow and Spot was unable to ring the bell. Instead, he barked continuously until he heard the approaching boat's whistle beyond the rocks. Spot's loud barking has been credited with warning the captain just in time to steer the boat and avoid the rocks. Spot was known as somewhat of a local hero and celebrity and is said to be buried on the side of the hill near the former location of the fog bell.

The grounds are stunning and I'm sure that watching the sun set at the lighthouse would be fantastic. Maybe if I listened real hard, I could hear Spot barking off in the distance.
