BEST ANSWER  chosen by asker   |  bestpay  |  June 16, 2009 03:13 PM
I really like all the answers and I wholeheartedly agree that they are all worthy of entry in the answer of the day (great idea and nice post lesliec!)

I'm gonna pick

@philipy http://www.mahalo.com/answers/aotd/what-makes-a-best-answer-on-mahalo-answers#a877855734110df9675ba20bf8d25b9bb449f66a0977f4705911e577c9e831da7

So why did I pick this one. Well i'm an admirer to start with of philipy's work, I seem to connect with this posts.

More importantly than that i'm passionate about the subject, quality answers on Mahalo. It seems ironic for me to select a post about "what makes a best answer on Mahalo" as a best answer but there you go!

I agree unreservedly with the answers and couldn't have written better myself.

Here are why I think it's a great answer:
1) Well written, good use of English
2) Attention to detail
3) Plenty of content
4) I agree with the content
Asker's rating:
This is a great example of a great answer! Good job!

"It seems ironic for me to select a post about "what makes a best answer on Mahalo" as a best answer but there you go!"

It's kind of incestuous isn't it? :)

On the other hand, it is nicely self-referential and recursive. Wait that was another question....

Anyway, thanks! Nice to know you appreciate my work. :)

I'm delighted that my answer reviewing what makes a best answer was selected as the best answer. If you know what I mean!

I'm delighted!

Boy, what a selection of choices! This is tough!

Right now, for timeliness, I think it should be @philipy. I think the time was ripe for another group tutorial on writing good answers. The site has grown so much since the last time it was done!

Good question, and it won't be the last time it needs to be asked, I'm sure.

@phillipy
How can you do better than that? A shoe in for "best answer" to the "best answer" question.
Adding "answer of the day" to that would be a great touch as well.
All the answers were great.
aaeeiioouu13 your answer is a very close second.

Wow, glad to see my answer was considered for "Answer of the Day". I feel honored. =]

I'm voting for @aaeeiioouu13 and these are my reasons why:

He explained very thoroughly why the references to God and religion in general should be removed from The Pledge of Allegiance. He did this without sounding like an atheist which is a big deal. He stated "The phrase "under god" should definitely be removed from the Pledge for a couple reasons... It simply isn't true... The original version of the Pledge did not include the phrase... "

What really made this answer a good one was his last sentence: "People are free to believe in "god" if they want, but they shouldn't need reminders from the government via such things as the Pledge, oaths in court, and currency."

He's absolutely right.

Here's the Pledge of Allegiance's timeline.

1892 -
I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

1923 -
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

1954 -
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Is than an exhaustive explanation, or an exhausting explanation?

Sometimes they're hard to tell apart. :)

There are two that really stand out to me as being complete, concise, informative, and interesting: @andreaxxjean and @aaeeiioouu13.

But one answer also wins points for being extremely helpful too (and having a bit of humor!), so MY VOTE GOES TO @andreaxxjean!

It really was a superb, unique, and helpful answer to a question that I've seen asked dozens of times across the web. This was the first time someone's answer on this subject actually captured my interest and not only made me want to read more - but provided the means for me to do it!

Great job, andreaxxjean!

It was only the first 30 pages though... but after you read those 30 pages, you'll want to buy the book.
