This is my page for Holly Montag who is a contestant on the show "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here".
After seeing her on the show I did an internet search to learn more about her. I was surprised at the lack of information there was online about her. Also I noticed that there was a Mahalo page started for her that was ranking high in the search results.
I thought this would be a good opportunity to make a great informative page for Holly Montag. I did the research and picked out the top sites with information about Holly. I used this to build her page here on Mahalo. So now I feel it is probably the best resource for information about her online.

I claimed Christmas Cookies because I am the sole baker in my house all year round and cookies are my specialty.
So far on this page I have added my own Guide Note, some lists of cookies by country, a video on how to decorate sugar cookies, a recipe for sugar cookies, lots of pictures, and some links under the Mahalo Top 7. Under the lists of cookies (which are sorted by country in alphabetical order) I bracketed all of the cookie names so if someone wants to make a page just about that one kind of cookie, my Christmas Cookie page is linked to it. I am adding to it right now (more countries).

I may not be taking full advantage of the Mahalo page features yet; but, I managed to put some in.
The strength of the page is in the amount of background knowledge which has been distilled into a reasonably concise amount of text.
After doing my page I took a look at other how-to-drink-beer pages on the web. They were either grossly simple and misleading or else attempts at humor. I have made neither a simple kitchen aid nor a connaisseur's guide to brews; but, rather a practical lifestyle approach to appreciating beer.

Topic Archive of the Week Episode III: Winner is Andreaxxjean
The winner of this weeks Mahalo Archive of the Week is @andreaxxjean with her page on Christmas Cookies! We were much impressed with the user of "Featured Objects" and the page has been well curated, all poor/dead links have been eliminated and the page will certainly be considered helpful to anybody searching on the topic. We can't wait to see how this page will evolve come December...when it will be sure to get most of it's traffic.
The two runners up will also receive a tip for their efforts.
@matthewh for Extrasolar Planets
@nushka for Buenos Aires
If you did not participate this week or want another shot at winning it all, tune in Saturday, that is when I will be posting Episode IV of Mahalo Archive of the Week!

June 15: @krystyne20 for Theory Of A Deadman

I moved the Mahalo Top 7 back to the top like you suggested, @philipy. However, I kind of like it better when it had the recipe right at the top of the page. The picture kind of accentuated the beginning of the page and made it look more unique, I think.

Yes, if it was a standalone page, the attractive recipe at the top would be a wonderful design. But as it's a Mahalo SERP, I think it's better if we don't start a trend of all doing our own thing, otherwise visitors will never know what to expect from a Mahalo page/
Report
June 19, 2009 04:45 PM
Well if they see more than one page (which I'm sure they will) they'll notice that each page has just about the same categories. So why is this a problem? Do all Mahalo pages have to look alike?
Report
June 19, 2009 05:30 PM
@andreaxxjean... Like with Wikipedia or Google, people expect a certain format, and to be able to find their way around easily.
A casual visitor isn't necessarily going to look around much to find what they wanted. They'll just as likely assume that if it's not where they expected to see it, it's not there at all.

Bob Marley , Bob Marley was a world famous Reggae star and Jamaican Singer-Songwriter who is often credited with helping to popularize the genre of Reggae. Besides his music, he was also a vocal proponent of the Rastafari movement and spoke openly about the political and spiritual oppression of the Jamaican people. I have spent time looking up questions and providing answers for those questions. My questions have been answered Directly (in the green color) and the text after is more facts about the answer. So basically if you want the direct answer it is in the green and if you want to read more, it is in the normal black text. I have spent a lot of time on this page, I hope you enjoy. (^_^)V

I think it's a fantastic page, but you're right, I think the color does create dividing opinions in the community. We don't have any guidelines or rules yet, for or against color text because we've never used html on previous versions of Mahalo and therefor never had the ability to add color the words.
I'll leave the green you added, but I'm going to revert it back to the original title "Bob Marley" without funky color collage. At least until we figure out some guidelines on html.

Aww taking of that color kinda hurts, but I understand. It just took me an hour to get it right lol. Not to big, not to small type of thing. @mysterygirl89 I think Mahalo aims to to be mix of Google and Wikipedia. Your pages aren't so much fan pages as impartial guides to the topic, and they are not standalone, but part of the whole web of info on the site.
So it's probably best to stick to the standard look-and-feel of a Mahalo page, whatever the topic, just like you'd expect to see on Wikipedia.

I like it, it's an interesting topic.
The guide note could use some more content, with cited research you could probably find some interesting history of how interchanges became to be. Beyond that just think of what people might be interested in learning when visiting such a topic and continue to add guide note sections that may benefit their needs.
With that said, it's a great start

I love city pages, what I would suggest for your page is much of what I've said above, we try to keep the guide notes similar on all pages regardless of the topic. try moving the lower paragraphs into a new text section below the Fast Facts with their own title. Then you can dedicate the 2nd paragraph above the guide note for the latest news about the city.

Adding a Guide Note is easier than you may think!
See the very top left corner of your page, where the picture currently appears? You should see a button reading "Edit." Click that.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/20671413@N02/3638332683/
Now in the box marked "Content:" just write whatever you want to say. I'd suggest a sentence or two about the Yankees and their history, and then maybe a sentence about Yankee fans. It's up to you, so long as it's informative and well-written.

Wow beautiful plant! Thanks for starting this page-- it will have some great information for users! I do have a few suggestions, those-- based on my experience writing how tos - that may be helpful to you as you continue on the page.
1. How Tos are text based pages, with lots of original content. As a result, they usually don't start with a Mahalo Top 7 for the best links on the web-- because your page-- the how to--should be the best page on the topic! So, I'd delete this section, and move any links you feel would be helpful down to a Resources section at the bottom of the page.
2.Move your featured image down under the introduction - so your text is the first thing on the page. There may be an ad with an image placed at the top of the page later on, and that will dilute the impact of your photo.
3. Straight text is fine for the introduction, but the steps should be made more "scannable", with the use of outlines and bullets. Try not to have more than three sentences in a row. Use the white space, so that it's easier for a user to quickly grasp what you're discussing.
4. Mahalo has lots of gardening pages! Make sure to link terms in your text to other Mahalo pages where possible.
5. Make sure to mention the name of your page in the guide note and introduction- this will help for page rank and traffic.
Thanks again for doing this page - and I hope these tips help!

A couple of your fast facts really should be cited...
There are 64.3 million fathers in the U.S.
159,000 stay at home dads
In your history section officiall should be officially.
I love the Gift idea section! Great idea!
Don't forget to add more redirects to your page. You really want to think Ok what are people going to search for about Father's Day? So we could have
Fathers day 2009
Fathers day history
Fathers day dates
Fathers day ideas
Fathers day projects
Fathers day crafts
and anything else you can think of.
That being said, again I will say, great job!

At first glance, I think the Step is a huge block of text, I wonder how you could simply the "how to" and make the steps shorter.. maybe even having Step 1.1, 1.2 etc..
Those are just my initial thoughts, I think its a great topic.

Really awesome work, @albanian. I like this page a lot. One thing...Try adding more internal links. You have a lot of words, like "microbrews" or "ales" that would work as links to other Mahalo pages. Even if it's something we don't have a page on yet, it's worth linking to, because people will still get comprehensive search results on any page they look for in Mahalo.
Again, wonderful job! I'm going to post the widget to this on my blog...hopefully I'll send you a bit of traffic!
