mahalo offers points for just viewing pages - is that scuzzy and does it beg for 'bots' to game the site?

anybody see that? you get 1 point for every 20 pages you view up to 500 pages per day (as in, up to 25 points for just viewing a ton of stuff - even if you don't read it - just click around)

to ME this smacks of advertising gaming: "we have over X thousand page views" per month (an ideal metric for engagement metrics for advertisers)

...but to those of you currently just clicking endlessly to rack up points each day, is this the most absolutely moronic thing or what????
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think the current system encourages points-whoring, as someone said. If I want to be #1, I just need to put 20+ questions every day and select a best answer. That's why I don't care about my "status", I am here only to help people, to have some decent fun and to get some tips along the way.

I think it's annoying to be reminded of how much time I waste on this site. Feel free to keep the loyalty section of my profile, but I'm sick of seeing how many pages I view every time I use this site.

Not only are points practically worthless, but bandwidth limits are starting to be imposed by ISP's everywhere (some stated, some not). Such a scheme would benefit Mahalo in the long term with lots of hits (increased potential ad revenue), but could really only have negative effects on the user -- an ISP could disconnect the user's service permanently for overuse of bandwidth.

i don't know about that - a quick check on a random mahalo page is pulling down around 700kb, 17 objects, 7 scripts, nothing huge - you'd have to hit a LOT of pages every single day to surpass even one or two days on hulu!

There's a top of 500 pages per day. Just by reading stuff I go beyond 500 in just a couple of hours. Bots make no sense, since you don't get that many points just by browsing.

I'm not a bot kinda guy.

The effort required to sic a bot on this site isn't worth simply getting points. You'd only get 25 points that way in a day! And no $M . You have to actively participate to do that.

I don't see it that way at all, I just browse through the site trying to answer questions I know that I can answer adequately. It's just a nice little perk that I got another point for getting to another 20th page, but you can only get a total of 25 in a day, and you need more than that to get a new belt level. Besides it's already been said - points do not = M$, so I see no issue at all with having points rewarded for such things.

yes, points don't equal money - but in fact, they do equal money when points convert to mahalo dollars for spending or answering as a 'premier' user (eg belt colors) in which case the system begs for gaming...you may earn real points and money for 'best answers' by posturing as 'more credible' even where answers are of identical value (does that make sense? i can clarify a bit on what i'm talking about here - i mean two people with identical offerings, but one would appear to be more credible by virtue of a 'badge' or 'user symbol' and on community sites, that lends weight for no reason other than it's what people see as a stamp of credibility)

Not when you have a limit depending on your belt. Anyway, you don't get $M by getting points. You get $M for answering questions.
