Mahalo "Friend" or "Fan of"... how are they different?

When I add someone as a friend, sometimes that person is added to my "Friends" list. Other times, they're added to my "Fan of" list. What determines the classification and how are they different?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Friends are those Mahalo users who have agreed to "follow" you and whom you follow. "Fan of" represents a one-way relationship. You are following them and they are not yet following you.

For example, on Jason, our CEO's, profile, you can see that he agrees to follow back nearly everyone who is following him, meaning he has thousands of "friends" and far fewer "fans."

William - I think I understand now. When you click on the "Add as a friend" link on someone's profile page, you are "following" that person. I would appear in that person's "My fans" section. That person would appear in my "Fan of" section. If that person clicks on "Add as a friend" on my profile page, they become my friend and I become their friend.

When they say "follow" they don't necessarily mean like on Twitter. Instead you can see what links they have added to Mahalo. As far as I know, that is the only thing you will see (at this point) beyond checking their profile.

I am dense. I still don't get it. What do you mean by "Follow" and what is implied by the two way relationship.

Basically, a friend is someone who follows you and asks to be your friend, yet has not been confirmed as a friend by you. It's a one sided relationship, meaning they only have asked to friend you, yet they have not been added as your friend. If you asked to friend someone and they friend you, then you are both considered friends. If someone asks to friend you, and you friend them, then you are friends. If only one person asks to friend another and the other does not reciprocate, then the person who asks to friend is considered a fan.

I think you meant to say "Basically, a *FAN* is someone who follows you and asks to be your friend, yet has not been confirmed as a friend by you."
