Mahalo Design Contest: Create AOTD graphics

The Answer of the Day contest is going through some major changes this weekend and the new contest version will be unveiled on Monday.

What we would like to have in time for AOTD2.0 are some graphics, and a logo. The logo should be in the W400xH150 range. This would be featured at the top of each AOTD thread.

Badges in the W200xH150 range, for the following situations.
- 1st Place
- 2nd Place
- 3rd Place
- Nominee

*Use of the term AOTD is optional*

The winning set will be rewarded the M$ prize, and their graphics will be named official Mahalo AOTD badges. However if you are reading this and prefer a different set, feel free to tip the designer and ask for permission to use their badges during upcoming contests.

Thanks, and stay tuned for AOTD 2.0

I have assembled the Mahalo Tiki's in honor of the mighty Answer of the Day contest.

These Tiki's represent the best of Mahalo Answers and can only look upon those who are worthy.

The First Place Tiki is playfully proud. Bearing his teeth, he stares down other answers and shows them his tong.

http://img2.pict.com/c7/25/c6/1609587/0/1stplace.png

The Second Place Tiki is fearless. Growling at the First Place Tiki he is privileged to be awarded a prize and maintains his place with confidence.

http://img2.pict.com/e5/c9/37/1609591/0/2ndplace.png

The Third Place Tiki is large and thankful. He solemnly says thank-you while paying respect to the first and second place Tiki's.

http://img2.pict.com/73/dc/f6/1609592/0/3rdplace.png

The Nomination Tiki is a combination of the placeholding Tiki's. He is happy, proud, and recognizably empowered.

http://img2.pict.com/cd/b2/f2/1609593/0/nominated.png

Last, the Answer of the Day logo itself displays each of the Tiki's under the umbrella of the Answer of the Day title banner. The background is a photograph of the North Shore of Hawaii.

http://img2.pict.com/0a/26/02/1609594/0/aotdlogo.png

I really hope that you like my take on this. The Tiki's are a Hawaiian element not currently in use by the Mahalo brand. Generally, I think that they are well suited for an "award" and can be assembled in a way that tells a little bit of a story to add depth to the contest that hopefully extends beyond simple graphics.
Asker's Rating:
• Once again you surprise us, not only did you get the most votes but Leslie and I both agreed yours was the best based on the originality and quality of your badges.

Great job Rob and thanks for helping out AOTD

@lesliec: That's very nice - thank-you. This is going to sound like a circular reference, but I'm not very good at showing people what I'm good at. I'm working on this.

@psynopsis:

What do you think?
This photo (above) was taken on Pipleline beach in Hawaii. It's a mecca of surfing and considered one of the best locations to surf in the world.

Here's another version (below) that is a panoramic photo of Turtle Bay beach. I created a gradient exposure adjustment on the bottom to mix a little dark with light. I think that it draws the eye down to the Tiki's a little and highlights the rough waters of that part of the ocean.

It will be very interesting to see the new AOTD 2.0, and although I am not a designer, I would like to try out my hands on creating something. Do you have some workprints to get started? Like the hula girl for Mahalo and Mahalo Answers, the surf board etc?

Oh, is the winner of the contest going to get the award on his personal profile page? Now THAT would be cool...

I like the badges; however, the lighting is all over the place to be used by Mahalo. I believe that if lighting adjustments were made, these would be great. Example: For the Mahalo text the lighting is coming from the top-left, where as the badges have the lighting coming from the bottom-right, the white board has the light coming from the top-right. It's really all over the place. I am not trying to be harsh by saying it, just believe that if it's all corrected, it would look great.

Here´s my proposal that keeps playing in symphony with Mahalo´s character...

AOTD - Logo
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/3083/aotdcopia.jpg

1st. Place - Badge
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/7210/1stcopia.jpg

2nd. Place - Badge
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1535/2ndcopia.jpg

3rd. Place - Badge
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5251/3rdcopia.jpg

Nominee - Badge
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/3214/nomineecopia.jpg

These designs clearly follow the actual Mahalo corporate image. I try to stick with the current image trend this site has built over time, preserving that tropical, subtle yet lofty looking image.

Mahalo, as all great businesses always try to do, has built an invaluable asset out of its corporate identity. A page which has come into big lengths to get proper recognition in the web, that has established itself as one of the 200 most visited sites and is today a common reference for those who seek "human powered" info. That´s why people "thank" Mahalo.

Therefore, the white-yellow flower, the Hawaiian dancer, the Best Answer ribbon and the surfboard, are all elements with intrinsic value for this company; they must not throw it away. My proposal follow Mahalo´s corporate guidelines not diverting out of the box, but still able to add subtle elements to the growing necessities of the page.

* The images here are shown bigger so Mahaloians can view them better. If chosen, I will provide the Logo and the Badges at the intended W400 x H150 and W200 x H150 respective sizes.

I don't think I have the time to design the graphics by this Monday, but here is the idea, the test of strength where you try to hit the bell with a sledge hammer......from the traveling carnivals I used to enjoy as a boy. The bell could be labeled AOTD and second and third prizes could be hits that didn't quite make it, see photo:

Even better would be an animated gif with sound! Or a link to such an animation.

In design, sounds aren't really big simply because they can get annoying. No offense. There are several people who say they like them, but then when they're listening to a sound that they don't prefer they end up thinking it's annoying.

I don't really care for the cut off look it has. IT basically looks like a box. YOu should probably do an image with the girl in full figure. Also, be sure that you're using space wisely, as design still needs space. Seeing these have none, it looks extremely busy for the little 200x133px box you have them in. I do like the logo/AOTD combination though.
