I would like to nominate this page:

How To Make A Stuffed Burger

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/44/120580974_1d6c0585c0.jpg
"A stuffed hamburger is similar to a traditional beef burger except that ingredients are inserted into the center of the burger to add flavor and pizazz to this summer classic."

I created this how-to from scratch. To make this an authoritative source on making a stuffed burger, I based the tutorial from my own refined recipe , "The Mushroom, Onion and Blue Cheese Stuffed Gourmet Hamburger". I composed the tutorial in an open-ended fashion so that the reader would understand that just about any ingredient could be used as stuffing.

Some features of this page include:
  • The content is based from my very own recipe.
  • The page lists 6 other unique stuffed hamburger recipes that I chose carefully from around the Internet.
  • I have featured the "Bacon and Havariti" photo from the Flickr user Cheezemaster and found a block of Youtube videos that further explain the stuffed burger making process.
  • Above all else, I've tried to compose clear and succinct steps that are easy to follow and understand.

I really hope that you like this page. Any comments, tips or criticism are welcome and appreciated!

Looks like you've created a great page here, Rob!

The only recommendation I would make to improve your page would be to add an image section, so that an image appears in the Guide Note. You could also capitalize further on the opportunity to inlink throughout the page text (ingredients, etc.)

You could also add to your page by including a section of other ingredients or combinations that one could use to stuff burgers in addition to your recipe and/or providing links to alternative stuffed burger recipes. I see that you've done so in the Guide Note, but, to be honest, I missed this section on my first look at the page. Perhaps placing the recipes in the "links" section would make them more visible?

Great suggestions Kalane! Thank-you!!!!

"add an image section"
I've gone back-and-forth on this exact thing. I'm worried about the length of the page. The right hand column is short in contrast to the left and I've been a little worried about balance. However, having an image appear in the Guide Note may trump that concern.

"include a section of other ingredients or combinations"
What a great idea!!!! I'm going to do that right now.

Thanks again!!!

"Perhaps placing the recipes in the "links" section would make them more visible?"

I tried very hard to add a "User Recommended Links" section but unfortunately ran into a bug in the CMS. I tried in a couple of different browsers a number of times to no avail before giving up.

I captured the problem here:

I've voting for @robbrown as he almost lost the page he worked so hard to build due to a bug or lack of communication somewhere..

Just the 'uh oh' pit of the stomach feeling when he saw that the how to page he created was now public for anyone to rewrite makes him worthy of this one in my book...

Great recipe btw... tried it the other night- yummy! Thanks!

I'm glad that you liked my recipe, Danny! Thanks for the vote!

Let me know if you try any other stuffing options in the future and I'll add them to the page!

Rob won fair and square-- great job on your first how to. I think we all need to have stuffed burgers this week!

I'll recycle the $10 he's splitting with me back into the community. Look forward to some questions!

I'd like to nominate How to Make a Cake. I believe this page lays out the detailed steps involved in making a cake so that even a novice baker can see that it's not harder to bake a cake from scratch that it is to make a cake from a mix. I've also included simple variants--once you've mastered this basic recipe, you can also make chocolate cake, spice cake, or citrus cake.

Thanks snowplusbrd! I hope the page is detailed enough that novices will be able to follow the instructions for How to Make a Cake easily. I also started another page which will be blown out over time on How to Bake - as there are many concepts that need a bit more explanation.

I would like to nominate How to Apply for COBRA (and Get The Federal Subsidy). I think this How To lays out in easy to follow steps how to go about retaining your health insurance after losing your job, as well as how to make sure the government helps you pay for it.

With the national unemployment rate hovering close to 10%, I think that this page is not only helpful, but (sadly) necessary.

I recently created:

How To Use An Ip Blocker

which helps with internet security when downloading. I have yet to add images to enhance the tutorial but will be getting around to that this weekend.

"This is a "how to" that teaches people who use programs like utorrent for file downloads to be able to block IP addresses that are hostile, malignant, or unsafe. This page does not condone illegal downloading but does educate on the means to filter what IPs connect to your bittorrent clients."

Not bad, but it seems like this is a tutorial for one specific software. I'm wondering is this the only way to block ip's or are there other options also?
snowplusbr...
snowplusbrd  |  July 19, 2009 01:43 AM
I see your point... the good part is that blocklist manager, which is the main way to compile the IP lists can convert the list to any program..... I specifically wrote for utorrent... It can also be written for bittorrent, bitcomet, protowall, peer guardian, etc.... But the main thing is how to work Blocklist Manager... which I guess could be the more major focus of this tutorial... how to use the list compiler

How To Make Your Own Music
http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-make-your-own-music

If you couldn't tell by now, I am a music guy. I made this page using my knowledge to help give people an idea of how to make their own music. I think this is something that a lot of people would like to do, but they don't know how. So this How-To page is for them.

I would like to nominate my page How to Make Money in Animal Crossing: City Folk.
http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-make-money-in-animal-crossing-city-folk?noprivs

It basically tells people the different ways to make money in the Wii game "Animal Crossing: City Folk." I believe that it would be very helpful for first-time players, but it also has a few tips for seasoned players on how to make a lot of money.

Looks very detailed, nice work. For suggestion, I recommend adding a pictures section and pinning a good pic so it will represent the page at the top.

It looks like you have a lot of expertise in this section. One that that may be helpful is to "use the white space" effectively--breaking up your sections into subsections with headings, and using bulleted lists where possible to make the page more "scannable". That way a user can get the gist of the article quickly, and focus in on the information they need.

I have some suggestions about the layout of the page. Since it is a how to page, people want to know the steps right away. Right now you have to scroll down a page just to get to the introduction. I know the top 7 is stuck up there. An alternative would be to add a links section and pin the same links as you have for the top 7. Then you can delete the top 7 section from the top. Only other suggestions would be to add a couple more tips to the left column. Other than that, looks good!

How tos ae generally text based pages-- so I'd suggest switching the "Top 7" to a "Resources" section, and moving it to the bottom of the page. That way the user will read your writing first. Content pages also generally have the guide note on the right rather than the left. To do this, click edit page title on the top right corner, and then check off the box marked content.

how to make a cheese cake ! =)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Yield
16 servings (serving size: 1 slice cheesecake and about 2 tablespoons topping)

Ingredients
Crust:
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 teaspoons water
Cooking spray

Filling:
3 (8-ounce) blocks fat-free cream cheese, softened
2 (8-ounce) blocks 1/3-less-fat cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (8-ounce) carton fat-free sour cream
4 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

Topping:
2/3 cup tawny port or other sweet red wine
1/2 cup sugar
2 (10-ounce) bags frozen pitted dark sweet cherries
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
4 teaspoons cornstarch
4 teaspoons water
Preparation
Preheat oven to 400°.

To prepare crust, combine first 3 ingredients, tossing with a fork. Add 2 teaspoons water; toss with a fork until moist and crumbly. Gently press mixture into bottom and 1 1/2 inches up sides of a 9-inch springform pan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 400° for 5 minutes; cool on a wire rack.

Reduce oven temperature to 325°.

To prepare filling, beat cheeses with a mixer at high speed until smooth. Combine 1 cup sugar, flour, and salt, stirring with a whisk. Add to cheese mixture; beat well. Add sour cream; beat well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract. Scrape seeds from vanilla bean; stir seeds into cheese mixture, reserving bean halves.

Pour cheese mixture into prepared pan; bake at 325° for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until cheesecake center barely moves when pan is touched. Remove cheesecake from oven; run a knife around outside edge. Cool to room temperature. Cover and chill at least 8 hours.

To prepare topping, combine port, 1/2 cup sugar, cherries, and reserved vanilla bean halves in a large saucepan; bring to a boil. Cook 5 minutes or until cherries are thawed and mixture is syrupy. Remove vanilla bean halves; discard.

Combine juice, cornstarch, and 4 teaspoons water, stirring with a whisk until well blended. Stir cornstarch mixture into cherry mixture; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 3 minutes or until mixture is slightly thickened and shiny. Remove from heat; cool to room temperature. Cover and chill. Serve over cheesecake.

Here's my page for How to Take a Screenshot on a PC.
http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-take-a-screenshot-on-a-pc

I see this question being asked a lot, so I decided to create a "how-to" page on the subject. Here's what it contains:

1. Step-by-step instructions for Windows XP and Windows Vista.
2. Links to the top 10 screen capture software applications.
3. Featured video for how to use Snagit.
4. Tips on choosing the best file format to save a screenshot.
5. Links to screenshot resources.
6. Links to reviews about screen capture applications.
7. Links to tutorials on how to use MS Paint and the Vista Snipping Tool.

If you can think of anything I've missed or something that needs more detail, please let me know. Thanks!
