I think that the drop in votes was due to both the "interestingness" of the questions on the weekend and also the amount of traffic on Mahalo Answers in general. While there is still a good volume of questions and answers, I've noticed that on the weekends, folks spend their time differently here.
I think that the question of the day does a couple of really good things:
First, it highlights good questions. This encourages people to ask better questions in general. While the site is called "Mahalo Answers", it lives and dies in the questions that are asked. Without high quality, interesting questions, folks won't want to contribute answers.
M$10 isn't chump change - if someone consistently put forth great questions, they could have a M$40 payout in a single week. There is a lot of opportunity over the course of a month to rack up some good coin by simply asking insightful, interesting, engaging questions.
Also, I think that the QotD provides an "at a glance" summary of some interesting questions. I suspect that a good percentage of people visit Mahalo Answers once a day. These folks are looking for the funniest, most engaging, most interesting questions. The QotD (hopefully) provides this summary.
I'm on deck to post the Question of the Day between Monday and Wednesday. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to send me a direct question (@robbrown), an email, Gtalk note, or a Tweet to http://www.twitter.com/AR_RobBrown . Don't feel bad about nominating yourself either... if you ask a good question, point it out!!!

As for what I think of QOTD... I think it's a great idea in theory, but in practice I don't find the questions that are selected all that fascinating, and I don't usually have a lot I want to say about them.
Also, rightly or wrongly, I don't expect that any of my questions will ever be chosen for QOTD.

Do you like Question of the Day?
What do you think of Question of the Day? There has been a major drop in voting with 26 votes in the first day and falling to 6 yesterday.
Do you like the idea - or do you think it is pointless. Suggestions please!

I don't think it's pointless because it gives people an opportunity to see some great questions they might have missed, but I also think it might be better suited as Question of the Week. Maybe put it 3 days after the Mahaloian of the Week? Plus you have to remember yesterday was Saturday and while I didn't have anything to do (sad) others were away from their computers.

I'm wondering why you closed this question so quickly if you were looking to get people's feedback. As for what I think of QOTD...
