In that case, I would say you can choose it as best answer.
When you select best answer, you can comment on the answer by saying something like "The original answer was not very good, but your reply was good"

On the other hand, if someone else replied and gave a good answer, I would not mark it as best (use "no best answer"). This has happened to me and the person giving the good answer didn't care about being selected (otherwise they would have made an answer, not a comment).
