I went through this today. Took me awhile to figure it out... for chatzilla from a firefox window go:

Tools>ChatZilla

You'll see this in the window that opens...
"INFO Available networks are efnet, freenode, hispano, hybridnet, ircnet, moznet, quakenet, serenia, slashnet, solidirc, undernet, webbnet."

Now click "freenode".

It will connect, once it connects..

type: /join Mahalo

If you want to change your name for instance mine originally was my real name "Amanda" you can type /NICK *name you desire* to change your name in chat.

In my case I type /NICK Unwirklich
