BEST ANSWER  chosen by asker   |  wdawe  |  May 26, 2009 04:22 AM
Hey I got tagged with an unhelpful for a question about tasering panthers. How was I to know OP was serious? In his defense the OP did not tag my answer as unhelpful, it was another Mahaloan. Don't worry though, the unhelpful will age out and you will soon be batting 100% yet again.
Asker's rating:
Thanks tp wdawe for sharing the info about aging out and jeffhoard about rounding up. Makes me feel less unhelpful.

Tag. One helpful vote for you. Good to hear they will age out. How did you find that out?

wdawe is right, if you get hit by a drive-by downvote it will most likely not have a long lasting effect on your profile. I was sitting 1% non-helpful for awhile and I am back to 100% that's because if you have a 99.5% it will round up.

Helpful and Unhelpful will always be based on users opinions and if that user felt your answer was unhelpful there is not much that can be done. It appears to be a new user and the best we can do is welcome them and educate them on when to use the unhelpful button. They will learn if they stick around the site much longer :D

It is always worth taking a moment to see that you really understand what the asker wants. That applies as much to writing a joke answer to what you thought was a lighthearted question as much as anything else.

I do bite my tongue a fair bit when a one liner springs to mind! :)

I know it's sometimes annoying to have your questions voted as unhelpful, but try not to let it get to ya. You know how the saying goes, "You can't please all of the people all of the time...".

That being said, a lot of new members may not understand that unhelpful votes affect a user's statistics so try not to take it personally. If you see someone repeatedly voting unhelpful on questions like this, you may want to send them a direct question to let them know why it's uncool.

I know it's tough. However, most Mahalo members realize anybody with a helpful rating of 85%+ and a green belt, purple tip is a very credible source of information.

15% unhelpful is actually pretty poor here!

Most people have less than 3% unhlepful. More than that and I woud start to wonder what's up with the person's attitude that they get so many unhelpful votes.

I appears that the person that marked your answer as unhelpful is newer and answers a lot of parenting questions. While, personally I thought your answer was a bit humorous - it still frankly and somewhat seriously answered the question within the humor.

I personally wouldn't stress about the unhelpful mark. Most of the answers that I find that have a higher frequency of unhelpful marks are the religious questions and opinion questions. I personally don't think that people should mark opinion questions as unhelpful or questions where people are talking about their personal beliefs. But then again, that is my opinion. :-)

Check out this one, it was prior to the Mahalo vote reveal so there is no way for the common man to tell who did it, but every answer is marked as unhelpful.

Don't worry about it. Nobody looks at those ratings but you and Mahalo anyway. We all get a couple unhelpful votes now and again. It 's just going to happen. Not everybody agrees with everybody else and that's a good thing.

Good Luck!

"It was a drive-by fruiting!" Haha.

I sympathize and agree with you. I think there should be a way to challange these sorts of things. If someone wrongfully votes you unhelpful, you should be able to contest it. No one wants their record tarnished.

You could also try reasoning with the person who voted you unhelpful. Once someone gave me an unhelpful vote on an opinion based question. I asked them why, and after thinking about it, they decided to change their vote to helpful.

On the same topic, I think we should be able to challenge questions that have been voted "no best answer" when there clearly was a best answer. I have lost out on many tips like this simply because no one voted on the question.

Actually, if no one votes on the question it remains undecided. If the question was decided as 'no best answer' then someone had to have voted for no best answer.
