I do like your suggestion of removing the unhelpful button in order to minimize grudges and abuse between competing Mahalo members.

Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
While fixing the "Helpful/Unhelpful" bug, how about eliminating the unhelpful icon? Instead, why not replace it with a "Spam" button?
This would prevent a lot of arguments from arising on answers. And since people hold grudges, things could escalate into irrelevant tiny clashes.
This would also end the use of the unhelpful button just to get your answer on top of the page. Just a suggestion to the Mahalo team.

I don't know about a spam button for comments, but I like the idea of a spam button for questions. I often see questions that are spammy and there is not much we can do about it. I have been told to click the "Report" button, but I noticed that often this does not get the question removed. @matthewh, well, there's also questions that aren't questions (and should be removed because of that). Here's an example: someone asks a question, it gets imported & answered here, and the user on Twitter responds. That response pops up as a new question, but it might be something like 'thank you.' :)
