When will Jason move the points necessary for a brown belt up and what should be my response?

For those of you who are new to Mahalo Answers, Mahalo CEO Jason Calacanis (jasoncalacanis) has this annoying habit of raising the points necessary to obtain the next belt level every time I get close to it. The last time I was this close to making brown belt, he more than doubled the necessary points (it went from 4000 to 8000).

This was nothing new. He did the same thing TWICE with the purple belt levels.

So now that I am less than 200 points from brown again, I am waiting for him to raise it again. I know it will be sometime between now and tomorrow morning--he does it in the middle of the night so I get to discover it the next morning.

I'm trying to figure out how I should respond. Lawsuit for pain and suffering? Sign up for Yahoo Answers? Dye his bulldogs pink (which can be done safely with cranberry juice--I don't tolerate violence esp. violence towards animals)? Cash in my tips, buy a Nintendo Wii and never be seen on Mahalo again?

Any suggestions?

Darcy, I think he will move the point level down so that you aren't the only brown belt. That would really be the best way to get on someone's nerves in a friendly kind of way.

Moving it back to 4000 points would mean that you @easyeboy @jeffhoard and @jasoncalacanis can all be brown belts together.

Actually, I think Brown is right where it needs to be. Looks like it will take Darcy 49/50 days to hit Brown which is where we thought it should be for someone who is super dedicated.

Brown should represent two to six months of work in the system.... and at the current point system it does.

However, I do understand the level system takes a LONG time between Green and Purple and Purple and Brown and that is not super motivating in the short term. In the long-term it will clearly make it obvious to folks that Brown belt means something significant.

We're going to add a level between each currently level so there will be at least 2x the number of levels. These will be called "tips" just like in martial arts. So, you'll be Green with a Purple tip and Purple with a Brown tip in addition to being a Green, Purple or Brown belt. you can expect that change next month.

We're going to review Darcy's account for the official Brown Belt test this week and I'm sure she will pass with flying colors.

Doesn't he have a girl and a boy bulldog? I'd dye the girl blue with blueberries and the boy pink with cranberry or tomato juice. Make sure you stomp your feet a few times also.

I doubt Jason did it tho(he's not that smart :P ) some math dude probably figure out that if they didn't spread them out better everybody would be at the same level pretty soon and you couldn't tell who was good and active and who wasn't. I'm surprised they haven't started having your points fall off after so long so that only active people stay at a high level. It might be totaly automated based on a exponential curve which gets adjusted as more people join the Mahalo answers and more people move up the ranks. I'm 20 points from the next level also. I'm betting they move the number just like with you.

Good Luck!!!

I don't know Darcy... you don't have to be smart to make money so long as you do a really good job of surrounding yourself with smart people (I suppose that could be argued as at least some semblance of smarts perhaps)!

Plus, take a look at the executives from Enron... they had more money than Jason and I would be happy to argue that they were not exactly smart and their actions prove just that

I have a strange feeling Taurus and Fondue would have issue with at least one of your ideas, though it would give them a chance to re-create this picture (albeit with a slight redish tint this time)

I do believe this time, since you are the undisputed queen, the belt levels may well stay so you will receive that which you so obviously deserve! :)

(and if not I say we egg his Tesla... I'll buy the eggs... you have to commit the crime though)

I figure for the cost the Tesla has to be able to self wash... or make breakfast... or cut hair... or something ;)

Side note here... I'm sensing you really want a Wii? lol :)

Option 1)

Kidnap his dogs in his Tesla. Ransom them for a Brown Belt and a Wii.

Option 2)

Using only a Krispy Kreme dougnut and mime, induce in him such feelings of empathy as will reduce him to tears, and such floods of gratitude that he will award you the Brown Belt and garland you with flowers, and a Wii.

#empathyday :)

@Philipy While both of those options are good ideas I hope Darcy has willpower beyond what I have... in option 1 there would be a requirement to give back the Tesla, I don't think I could do that once I had a chance to drive it... in option 2 there would be a requirement to give jason the doughnut, how anyone could give up a Krispy Kreme is beyond me...

I believe that Darcy is so enamoured of the Wii, she would exchange it for a Tesla. Besides which the Tesla wouldn't fit in her basement.

When it comes to doughnuts, I believe a Brown Belt is required to have a Zen-like detachment in which they can see that neither they, nor Jason, nor the Krispy Kreme exist, but in fact all are one. How one manages to demonstrate all that in mime, I don't know. But then I am a humble green belt, who only sees a doughnut as a snack.

yup.  it's a matter of time.  i used to have a purple belt.  but you know what?  it doesn't matter.  you still have your points.

and purple is such a nicer color than brown.

"Alpha children wear grey They work much harder than we do, because
they're so frightfully clever. I'm really awfuly glad I'm a Beta, because I
don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas.
Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no,
I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to
be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly
colour. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

Dear Darcy,

I would advise you to leave. Sorry, but grow up; it's only the internet. And please, stop with all the hate. Seriously.

Mahalo Answers is a service, provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, or promise to keep belt levels the same all the time. Why not set your ego to be the top-ranking Mahalo Answers member aside, stop worrying about what color belt you are (petty, right?), and just keep kicking ass and being the most helpful person on Mahalo Answers, or whatever site you choose? Isn't that enough? As far as I know, nobody forced you to spend all your waking hours here. You're here by choice, like the rest of us.

Appreciate what you have, because all the people you've helped sure appreciate you--regardless of what color your digital belt on a site that's in beta may be.

Sincerely,

Mike

Right, so of course there's some seriousness to the question or she wouldn't have asked it. Forgive me if I missed the banter in your question.

Cheers

Wishing you luck with the Brown Belt Darcy, you can do it! Get the Nintendo Wii, you've earned it!  Then become a Nintendo champion, and prove to the world that you were not only one of the best answerers on Mahalo Answers, yet you also are one of the best video game players in the world.  Shock Jason, win some video game championship, now that would be funny

If he raises it again we will all lose, because i'm positive that people will start leaving so there will be less questions/answers.  the point levels are too high as is.

I actually don't think that it will be raised again. It's been a good month or so since you have gotten close to the belt level, and I think it's clear that you participate on Answers significantly more than others. I myself was keeping up with you for a while but have slowed down a lot. Users other than Queen Darcy will take between 3-6 months to hit Brown belt.

So I think you're good to get your brown belt soon.

Although I'd pay a lot to see Taurus and Fondue tinted pink, if only for a little while.

We're not planning on raising the points at this point. Right now we feel it takes the right amount of time.

I don't know whether the points will change. But it does seem apropos to give my two cents worth on the belt colors. Sure they're taken from the martial arts, but why be stuck with them? This is computer stuff. Computers have 2^24 colors and even the very oldest that I remember (and I'm old) had 16 (not counting monochrome days). Let's have lots of levels with lots of colors! And brown and black are so ugly and boring! More bright colors for belts!
