I dunno to be honest, I have been part of several large communities who end up deciding to put up chat rooms "for the fun of it" and they end up either
A) being empty 90% of the time, and
B) constantly being populated by fly-by-night spammers.
If we did have a chat room it would need to be monitored and moderated 24/7 which would create a need for another human resource from us.
I just don't see the value in Mahalo chat room? We already have an IRC chat, if anything we could simply add a link to that somewhere on the site, I don't think the sidebar needs it's own chat room.. but that's just my two cents, I think there are plenty of ways to chat online, I would simply prefer to see Mahalo Answers stay Q&A website.

Not only that, but unless I am wrong, the only other way to talk to people directly is by Direct Questions. This would definitely be a great extension. Kudos on the great idea.

One way of getting some more text space would be to display only the first 6 characters of a user name. There are probably other, better ways of achieving it, and if I think of any, I'll let you know.
And, yes, the Facebook chat concept that enables one to move around the site without losing the chat, is the most suitable one for Mahalo.
By the way, the link to Mahalochat you posted is malformatted:

It's all well and good having a IRC room elsewhere (to keep the riff-raff out!), but I can't really see how putting this on the site itself will help much.

SUGGESTION: A sidebar chat room?
I have designed a chat room based on the current Mahalo chat room. (http://tinyurl.com/mahalochat)
It is very similar to that of the Mahalo chat room - but fits into the sidebar.
Problems:
TEXT = It would be hard to fit masses of text into the sidebar because of the member names.

I don't think the chat room should be on the main page. I say, turn it into an AIM Express kind of idea. Something that can pop-out and stay out of the way of the answering process, but won't take away the thunder of the answers. I do think it is a REALLY good idea, though, because there are many intelligent, civil people on here, and I think we can learn a lot from one another. Not only that, but unless I am wrong, the only other way to talk to people directly is by Direct Questions. This would definitely be a great extension. Kudos on the great idea.

Yeah, I like the idea it only shows 6 characters! And the Facebook idea would be the best on each page!

Go for it!
Another idea as to how to gain more text space would be to have user names "hidden" under a tab, something like External links on my homepage:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~zoc
'cause you don't need to have all names displayed all the time.

Honestly, if I am Mahalo I probably wouldn't want to see a chat room (regardless if it might provide a better experience for the users), because you could envision a scenario where the users start interacting over chat and not creating nice free content for Mahalo's database that it gets to advertise around and monetize for free. At the end of the day, the company needs to make money and advertising is probably their best bet. My sense is, given they are subsidizing questions by paying 1M dollar for every best answer, they lose money here in hopes of making it up on the advertising end. No content = no ad dolloars = no business.

I agree with @jeffhoard, I've seen website chat rooms being filled up with spammers - completely ruining the look of the website. It's all well and good having a IRC room elsewhere (to keep the riff-raff out!), but I can't really see how putting this on the site itself will help much.

I agree. The chat is nice, but if it's embedded on the sidebar people might start sidestepping the site and asking questions in the chat room.
