cjd - thank you for your effort - some great suggestions there!
we have several layout versions in development, and possibly we'll be testing it in the future.
please keep your ides/suggestions rolling - we appreciate everyone's input.
thank you,

I'd personally want the 'Ask a Question' above 'Top Members', so it draws a bit more attention to itself, however that's just personal preference - feel free to argue the toss on that one.

I am still leaning to putting the Ask box in the middle, between top members and the ads on the bottom.
For one, the ads are closer to something the people will be more likely interested in (asking a question vs looking at top members) and i think it may look better aesthetically.

One feature that doesn't have anything to do with design really that I'd like to see is Ajax support with a live questions feed. It probably won't happen since it would tremendously hurt page views and ad impressions, but maybe it can be implemented with only questions coming in from twitter?

SUGGESTION: A new layout for Mahalo re-edited
After some great criticism from my previous design, I have just tweaked my previous design to make it more simple.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3388/3424573404_17b3883b88_o.png

I love it, a lot cleaner than the last design, and not a dramatic change to the existing layout. I'd personally want the 'Ask a Question' above 'Top Members', so it draws a bit more attention to itself, however that's just personal preference - feel free to argue the toss on that one.

Might it look a bit more sensible to have the ads lining up with the 'Question of the Day', and then 'Ask a Question' lining up with the 'Share knowledge...'
Just something that may be worth trying, just to see how it works

Way, way better. Kudos. The only thing is, I would really rather see it with the top bar. As it stands, having the Ask a Question on the top right makes the whole top part seem a bit too bland, and maybe Top Members would look better there as it stands. But if you incorporate the top bar, I think this may just work. I am still leaning to putting the Ask box in the middle, between top members and the ads on the bottom.

I was writing up a whole thing about the other design and now I see this! Much better in terms of cleanness and simplicity. I'd do a mockup myself, but I'm afraid I'll just end up redesigning the whole site haha. One feature that doesn't have anything to do with design really that I'd like to see is Ajax support with a live questions feed. It probably won't happen since it would tremendously hurt page views and ad impressions, but maybe it can be implemented with only questions coming in from twitter?

Sorry about that. I had quickly edited (actually very quickly) and I'm sorry you were spending time on one answer and then realised I had done a different one.

Edit: just realized I forgot a few things like ads and the buy Mahalo dollars button, but you get the idea.

zounds! it's weird seeing oneself immortalized in the mock-up design ...
i'm so used to iStock photos and the Lorem Ipsum in mock-ups, it's almost disconcerting to see anything else.

That page already exists on Mahalo right now. It is not on your profile page as in your design but you can check it out at http://www.mahalo.com/answers/spy?filter=via-twitter
We definitely have a few improvements to the user profiles in the pipe lines...stay tuned.

I like the new design much better than the old one. However, I don't think that its that big of a change. It has the same basic content, but everything is shifted around. One thing that I would like to see if the Mahalo page was changed is a lighter format. This website seems to load very slowly on my 256K connection, and I don't know if its because of the massive ammount of content or the website is poorly optimized, but I would like to see a new version load faster than the current one.

Its seems to work very quickly on my computer. I have Google Chrome - and it runs extremely quickly. Browser's like Internet Explorer are far slower at loading these pages, even with Internet Explorer 8.

I love doing some designs for Mahalo as I enjoy designing. I will say that @thekid, his designs are extremely interesting with the logo enlarged and the ask a question featured at the top.
