Should there be a red belt and a blue belt rather than a black belt 2, 3 and 4? And should stripes be awarded for doing well in a topic?

Instead of

White
White With Yellow Tip
Yellow
Yellow With Green Tip
Green
Green With Purple Tip
Purple
Purple With Brown Tip
Brown
Brown With Black Tip
Black
Black 2nd
Black 3rd
Black 4th

It should be like:

White
White With Red Tip
Red
Red With Blue Tip
Blue
Blue With Yellow Tip
Yellow
Yellow With Green Tip
Green
Green With Purple Tip
Purple
Purple With Brown Tip
Brown
Brown With Black Tip
Black

What do you think?

UPDATE: After what @orange said, do you think Mahalo should award "stripes" for performing well in a certain topic? For example: technology could award a light blue stripe etc.

I think once the Black Belt status is achieved, the belt should receive certain colored stripes or stars for future achievements.

We're using the traditional Tae Kwon Do belt process here at Mahalo Answers. I think you'll find that the amount of time it takes is almost perfect.

We're not looking to have a LOT of leveling up. We want it to take a decent amount of time so that folks understand that it's NOT easy. Just like in Tae Kwon Do.

For example, if people have average involvement in the system here is what it takes (off the top of my head):

Yellow Belt: one to three days.
Green Belt: five to ten days.
Purple Belt: ten to 30 days.
Brown Belt: 30 to 90 days.
Black Belt: 90 to 180 days.

This basically means folks will take six to 12 months to get to Black Belt. That is what we're looking for.

The fact that a lot of folks are "stuck" at Green with Purple tip is EXACTLY the point! It's really hard to get to Purple, and even harder to get to Brown. We like this "challenging points" because it makes people really focus on the goal.

The next addition to the system won't be belt levels, it will be number of best answers. So, you could be a "Green Belt with 23 Best Answers" and I might be a "Brown Belt with 18 Best Answers."

That will tell you: how long someone has been around AND how good their answers are. :-)

Here is how it might look:

As far as I know, the Mahalo ranks system is based on karate, or taekwondo belts colors, and as such it's more or less fixed. That will say, they probably wouldn't change it, unless there is some very good, substantial reason for doing so.

p.s.
now I remember: the issue of belt levels & colors has been discussed only few weeks ago -

The question talks about the update of "tips" and the opinion of what each belt stands for.

What I am talking about, is the idea of new colours of belts. Red and Blue.

You are correct: it is based on Tae Kwon Do and it's not going to change radically--if at all. Right now we've got a really nice process of it getting slightly harder each time. I love looking at the top 100 list and seeing exactly how folks cluster... it's a great way for users to understand who they are dealing with *instantly*.

If I see you're a Green belt or better and I know that you're a decent contributor. If you're a purple or brown belt I know you're VERY serious about the community.

It's working out so well!!!! :-)

Right, I think there should be more levels which are easier to achieve - for it is putting members of the community off, for it is taking forever to achieve the next level.

As @orange had said, that stripes could also be added (aside from tips) to give even greater status.

Depends on your definition of forever.
I think there are enough levels. And the proof is that nobody has achieved the black belt yet. Also keep in mind that there was an exam to become brown-belt.
I like the idea of the topic-related stripe.

Well, since MA doesn't have the "ask a question and lose points" thing like Yahoo, then eventually there are going to be people hitting the ceiling.

Also, there should be more frequent leveling.

(Speaking of which, I'm at 1999 points as I'm writing this...)

I think there needs to be another level between purple and brown

When I was getting close to purple, I was answering more questions and getting motivated on leveling up. Now that purple with brown tip is SO far away, I'm definitely not putting forth the extra effort.

I think eathatpopcorn that there should be more colours that are easily achievable. Black or red, as some people have said, should be the end result and therefore you become a Mahalo _______. What do you think?

Sorry you feel that way @eatthatpopcorn! You're already at purple belt which means you are a very significant member of the community. You'll have your Brown belt tip soon enough.... one secret to getting there? Vote on a couple of undecided questions every day and ask questions with tips!

I like them as people will become more attracted to getting the blue's and the red's rather than a series of blacks.

Still there should be brown, purple and black. What about other colours - orange, grey, pink, turquoise etc

I think the system should be like the suggestion in the actual question. It is simple to understand, and allows enough levels that people can feel that sense of accomplishment that keeps them using Mahalo. I also think that stripes are a fantastic idea that would really allow question askers to feel like they are getting accurate feedback from their answerers.

- With Stripes -
White
White With Red Tip
Red
Red With Blue Tip
Blue
Blue With Yellow Tip
Yellow
Yellow With Green Tip
Green
Green With Purple Tip
Purple
Purple With Brown Tip
Brown
Brown With Black Tip
Black

Maybe. I like the idea of deciphering between degrees of black belts with stripes because it solves the problem without adding new belts, but at the same time, I don't necessarily like the idea of hindering solid color integrity of a black belt; the highest one at least. A black belt should be solid black, I think.

Here's my idea(not that I think the current belt system should necessarily be changed): if your going to change the system, add insignia, such as, a symbol of merit for winning certain amounts of best answers, etc.

But anyways, good luck with that.

The stripe system is reflecting a martial arts but there are many different belt levels in use. In my personal experience, I've seen many belting systems:

Judo 25 years ago: White/Yellow/Green/Blue/Brown/Black, no stripes
Karate (current): White/Yellow/Orange/Green/Blue/Blue with Stripe/Purple/Purple with Stripe/Brown/Brown with Stripe/Black
Aki-Akijujitsu (20 years ago): White/White-Yellow Stripe/Yellow/Green/Blue/Brown/Black
Tae Kwon Do (18 years ago): White/Yellow/Orange/Green/Blue/Brown/Red/Black

It really depends upon the art, the school and the instructor.

Our Karate instructor uses horizontal stripes (marked with tape) between belts to motivate students. A system like that might help people stay motivated. Yellow with green tip, Yellow with green/darkgreen tip, Yellow with green/darkgreen/green tip, Green ...

It's more a way of measuring you through the belts. Our dojo uses the mini strips to keep rewarding people between belts.

But I agree.

I'd prefer to see orange and blue added (white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, black) to create more levels.

We have to look ahead, in a year or so there will be many black belts so yes it would be a good idea to make new / more belts.

Figured I would put this as an answer as well, since it is scrunched up as a comment (plus I want my two points!). Just kidding. :-)
