Redo of Facebook Icon, your opinions!
We have all seen Mahalo's new "Facebook" icon being launched today and personally I hate it. Why? The Facebook logo is a bit fuzzy and doesn't look that "Facebook-like"
Now, you may have seen my last two designs and they had problems. So, finally I have come up with a basic, but more simplistic and impressive Facebook icon. See and judge for yourself!
Mahalo's current one:

You probably are thinking "That's way too basic!" - but then look at Jason's Facebook Icon which is used at the moment - and compare them. Which do you think is better?

I hate the old design also, but this one you came with looks better, and I like the curve you made to the background!
I will just suggest we take a look to it in the same size of the avatar at Mahalo.com, so .. this will help to take a better decision, it should look like this:
Now as you can see, the logo is not clear when it will be scaled to 65x65 pixel, that means you should design the Avatar at the exact size you want to use it.
Another suggestion but I am not sure about it as it's about the old design, if you can use the letter "F" for Facebook like this way (this is a 150px image scaled to 65px):
I just think it's better if you can use the minimal size you can, but at the same time make it visible.

Brilliant work! I love your designs!
Brilliant hishaman! I think your interpretation is even better! I certainly think you have the greater "f" for Mahalo!

This time I would go for a bigger banner because the avatar is already small.
And sometimes the background has details that may distract from the banner.
It is true the current one lacks resolution, that has to change. However, I can identify the f from facebook since it is the same logo I see in the browser tab.
It is a start.

I like your "new and improved" version over the big "F" currently in use. Although I recognize the f as the Facebook logo, it somehow looks like the icon "Failed."
It is great that people care about the Mahalo community, and how it looks, and works, and how it could be better. When you take the facebook design with the full word down to the smaller size the word disappears. The two designs with the letter f, what they are using, and your proposed one are actually very close - if not looking specifically at it, I bet most folks won't notice any difference between the two. So, I don't know if the great debate is that much of a debate any more, but one of detail or preference. So, do you give up some of the blue square that is intended to hi light the letter f, that gives a branding, an advertisement for facebook - do you give up some of the advertising in order to cater to an aesthetic that prefers it is not there, or do you also consider the context of other branded icons - the Twitter icon of a large patch of blue in the twitter bird, the email icon of a large square of white - do you take away the common theme of a larger branding symbol and have a smaller f symbol without the distinctive blue square, or do you look at the facebook branded icon separately on its own merits and choose the aesthetically nicer one? If I was still in a graphic design course for advertising probably they would not let you minimize the branding look, the distinct symbol on one avatar, and have the others remain disproportionately large. If I was still in an art class, which I failed, I might like the smaller symbol better or not, not sure I learned what I was supposed to there. What other branding does facebook use that is distinctive? Twitter uses a blue bird, so that is a perfect branding symbol, and it is cute also. Maybe, if there is no cute memorable icon or symbol in use on Facebook, the core problem really lies in a failure in the marketing and advertising department of Facebook itself, and we are arguing about applies and oranges, when really the lack is the recognizable logo symbol from Facebook itself. Maybe the designing help needs to be sent to Facebook to give them a cute branding logo like the twitter bird, because that is where the real problem lies, so until that is fixed you can only do the best you can. If future advertising revenues may hinge on having a visible branding of Facebook in Mahalo, and they don't provide a logo, or no one offers them a logo or symbol that they will adopt or accept, then for advertising revenue purposes in the future it probably makes sense to try to continue with a larger blue patch and a letter, and replace that with something new when they provide the material to work with. A more urgent question might be, how to figure out how to get more folks to come into Mahalo and or use it because that seems to have importance for the future of Mahalo as far as how far it goes and how well it does. It seems to me that the facebook icon problem may just fade away all by itself once they unveil some new initiatives at facebook as all companies need to in order to continue to do well in this competitive marketplace, so the real answer may just be time will tell, and a new design discussion can start up at that time and continue on from this one. My 2 cents for now. Great job cjd in trying to solve something that seems kind of impossible to me at the moment due to lack of resources! I am not on facebook so I really can't say much more, but if you click on the main facebook site, at the beginning of the url you will see the symbol that Mahalo is using - so it looks to me like their hands are tied - they are using the preferred corporate logo from the company - so what else can you do if that is what they prefer for now? You know they can always change it when facebook rolls out some new preference but I think the look of the Mahalo logo is more to do with facebook branding that they use than anything else.
