Petition: Create a BLUE belt?

With (at time of writing), 14 members who are black belts....don't you think it is worth adding a blue belt?

A couple of months ago, it looked nice with yellows, greens, purples and browns all in the top members...but would you want to see a list of black belts? I think there needs to be a new colour to lighten it more than 4 levels of black.

Ohh I love the color blue. But the black belt is a representation of an "Expert"

----Quote----
The black belt is commonly the highest belt color used and denotes a high degree of competence, and often associated with a teaching grade though frequently not the highest grade or the "expert" of public perception
---End Quote---Wikipedia

But I would LOVE to see a soft blue belt like that

I have suggested before that we have more belt colors. They could be spaced out in the middle of the belts we already have, or they could be added to the top like you mentioned. I think it would be more fun to have more belt colors like red, blue, and orange.

Here's another way we can present more levels on a black belt user:

Thats a pretty awesome idea, because it is a way to differentiate the black belts, or it would be nice to have your point ranking number on the side

They are traditionally white stripes. This shows the transition from black belt back to white belt.

I like this idea too, in fact I suggested back when I hit 2nd degree BB and failed to notice. Jason was keen on the idea too. I couldn't tell ya when we'll see it implemented.

This does seem like a sensible idea to me.

It adds differentiation and it also makes it harder for people to reach black, which surely as it's the pinnacle must be right? (I might regret saying this one day!).

A Blue Belt seems a must, I hope to wear one some fine day.

Yes I think more colors (basically renaming black to other colors, or restructuring the belt color levels while not adding more levels) is a great idea.

I personally submit RED belt should be in there. Blue belt and Orange possibly too...

So then (in my opinion) it could go:

WHITE
YELLOW
ORANGE
GREEN
RED
BLUE
PURPLE
BROWN
BLACK

The test would still be at full level 5, so this would then be known as the Red test instead of the Brown Belt test.

Hmmm. You gave me some food for thought. Back when I was in martial arts, the style I was in ranked this way:

White
Orange
Purple --- at this point, if participation and training were sufficient, a person could be awarded a teaching belt - the red belt. This qualified them to teach lower levels and gave them access to additional training time. The person continued to earn other belt status in addition to the teaching rank, but wore the red belt as both an honor and an indicator that lower ranks could go to them for help.
Blue
Green
Brown
Black

Something similar might be interesting....

Maybe not purple...maybe if we based it on your diagram blue/green belts. They could help teach white/orange and maybe purple belts how to use Mahalo, Mahalo Answers and Mahalo Tasks.

Is Blue Belt a rank in any martial art? If so, I think adding one is a good idea.

I donno... I sort of like the simplicity of limited colors. I think that this problem comes down to exclusivity.

I'd rather see Mahalo define a very clear set of rules to which a Black Belt must achieve (through a community vote and input) and then undergo a real account review that failed over 50% of the people who took the test.

Sounds harsh, but this would solve the problem and make black belts something with exclusivity.

I think that (other than me of course), all of the Black Belts represent very good users... if folks don't start failing, 2 years in the future, you're going to have to create a whole rainbow of belts to maintain exclusivity.

With 14 belts already....it wont be long before the whole top 100 is black belts. what will happen when 100s become the top Black belt? (Unlikely but still...)

Do they make a new belt is the question? Or should they put new ones before....?

Yeah, that's what I mean... I think that the tests should get harder. If the test is designed to only allow the best of the best into a black belt, there won't be as many.

Just an idea though... I sure don't know if it's the right one.

But, more belts is more complicated. New users don't really know the difference between a black belt and a purple belt.

You will get a great populist reaction to this @cjd and I applaud you're efforts, I actually brought this question the big guy upstairs before...(That would be Jason)

I suggested a new belt level and it got struck down because it didn't fall make sense in accordance to the rules of martial arts. However, he did agree that higher level black belts need to stand out, so I am sure we'll see something along the lines of @csandoval idea perhaps when Mahalo Answers gets it's next big upgrade.

Researching and answering questions is not a martial art! The whole analogy is flawed. It's almost as awful as the way 6-sigma uses the belts. They shouldn't either but then that's total nonsense anyway.

Only create a blue belt if it fits in among the others - don't insert it into the mix and raise the other belt levels.

I think that the black belt shoud remain the highest belt, like it is in martial arts. However, I wouldn't mind having other belts in between the current belts. Especially between brown and black, which are both dark and spaced far apart. I also think that there should be some indicator to show what degree a black belt is, white stars, perhaps?

Good call, we need to differentiate between the higher belt levels for sure. Our designer started working on something today. We should have it live on the site early next week.

There should be a full rainbow of color belts. Answering questions is not a martial art. It's not even particularly oriental. Turning your belt brown, turning it black, even putting dirty spots on it is a disincentive to collect points.

Interesting... in the early belts... things progress pretty rapidly and later the points between a new rank seem really extensive.... it might not be bad to put some additional levels in between some of the larger gaps between belts.

In karate, it is the 4th 'level'. So it shouldn't be the top, but near the middle of the other levels, if we were to have it.
But not all systems follow that guideline.
