I think it is a great idea. I have a number of friends who I recommended the site to, but I don't know whether they all joined and are participating.

If I could get them to ask that first question to see how fast they can get a great quality answer I think more of them will follow through with my reminders to register.

I don't think there is a danger of getting rich quick either. It takes a substantial amount of time to research and write out quality answers and even then there is no guarantee it will be selected as the best answer. If someone goes through all the effort they aren't getting rich quick, they are getting compensated for their hard work.

That's something that's come up internally. It's a good idea, but would require a month of precious developer time.

Right now I think questions by email will become the huge viral traffic driver. When anyone in the world can ask a question by email TKTTKTKKT@mahalo.com it will really make the service popular I think.

The way I see it, the referral method encourages the participation of very high quality researchers. M$1 for every M$10 would be a great incentive for one to bring here the best people that he knows. Suddenly, it's not a competition anymore, it's a way of making money easily.

The email method encourages traffic, but there is the risk that there would be low quality questions and a lack of activity from researchers, the chance of getting points, M$, best answers, anything, dropping down to zero.

If the process was to give one answerer M$1 for ever M$10 another answers they referred up to some point it might work.

So, you invite ten folks into the system who each make M$10 for a total of M$100. You get a M$10 bonus.

Just getting people to signup doesn't really help the system.

Also, these types of systems tend to bring the wrong crowd--the get rich quick crowd. We're not looking to help people get rich quick... we're looking to build a community that has tipping as a way of saying thanks.

That get rich quick crowd would have to be one hell of a crowd. When I hear about getting rich quick I think about survey systems, and on Mahalo Answersyou're not exactly filling out surveys with random data in the hope that you'll make big bucks.

This site already has attracted the "get rich quick" crowd to some degree. I can see a referral bonus being abused, as Dreamhost's referral bonus was abused in exactly this way.

As for the part of your suggestion regarding unregistered users, it doesn't really seem possible to give someone Mahalo money if they're not in the Mahalo system -- M$ do not exist outside of the Mahalo system. For someone to have verifiable M$, they need to be in the system.

They would receive the M$ when they register. Trust me, it can be done.

That all still boils down to assigning them money after they've registered.
