I did this exactly like @philipy said I picked a niche topic and just went for it.
The process was new to me so it took me a bit to get the hang of it but now after 3 months of improvements it is one of my highest viewed pages. I really just made a complete mess and then in cleaning it up taught myself the ins and outs of page creation.
No shame in just going for it.

For now you could approximate this by making your own page, and using that for practice. It could be a page about a super-niche topic, about yourself for example, or even just called "X's Test Page".
Look at the History link on your pages. If you see the same things as me, there should be a list of the changes, and a rollback option.
The rollback is a new thing, I've never seen it til recently, and not tried it yet.

Can a practice "managed page' be available for newbies to experiment on, that would have extra features such as roll back?
Being a newbie, I would like to have a practice "managed page" to work on, that I can experiment with. One that is not posted, but useful for testing layouts. It would have the rollback option as an additional feature, so you could go back to any previous version, and then branch out from there. One could do the initial construction there, and then when ready, "publish" to the page you really are working on. Any thoughts about having this option? Advantages or disadvantages. The rollback feature would be nice on all pages, but this may be to costly to implement. If you like, include any ideas about features you would like on such a page.

• It was hard to select between answers. You've been very helpful, and encouraging and recently gave me a tip, so I want to acknowledge that. Like you, I just went for it. I haven't read any of the guides. I rather just plunge in anyway and ask questions on the forum.

I don't see the roll back on my managed page under "view history." Is it so new, that it is only available on new pages? Can I abandon one of my two pages,( I am a newbie,) and create/claim a new one, to get this feature?

You can abandon a page after finishing playing around with it.
I don't know why you can't see the rollback feature, but it might be limited to people with a high belt level. We have a few more things that we can do than most.

I just asked the question as to what belt level the rollback option become available: http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-technical-issues/at-what-belt-level-does-the-rollback-option-become-available
As a work around, I now have 5 managed pages to play around with. Even this number, though, is not enough for experimentation.
And I just did a page for myself under my name Duen Hsi Yen

I think one is enough is you want to learn how to make pages.
If you're interested in trying your hand a a variety of different topic areas to see how it goes, then you'd need more. But obviously Mahalo doesn't want people making or claiming lots of pages until they've proven they can do a good job with a few.
