The helpful way to vote "unhelpful"

Just a friendly community reminder from ol' man Hoard here.

When you vote unhelpful on a users answer this can cause users to take the vote personally, so do your best to provide a comment on the answer explaining how the user can improve their answer.

Also, when your answer is voted as unhelpful do not report the user unless there is substantial evidence of abuse from the user and be prepared to present that evidence in your complaint.

You do have 1 hour after you post an answer to edit it and make it better. So if you have unhelpful votes consider fixing up your answer and leaving a comment after you do, perhaps the "unhelpful" voters will come back and give you a "helpful" vote

I feel we should all be honest in how we feel voting .And we should never
vote unhelpful on any one unless you are sure in your mind that the answer
was unhelpful Don't click unhelpful to get your rocks off . Be respectful to
every on here . Know we all here are family and we all try to help with answers.
even though the answers are not going the best all the time . It is the answer that you give is what matters in all you say. My way of voting unhelpful
is to not vote unhelpful because it will all be the same . If the person does not
get a vote at all for being helpful or unhelpful my point is it all works out . I just don't vote at all for them .

Is this a comment or an answer...? Just asking. Assuming this user earned 4 points for responding within the hour, I'd like to respectfully mention another point - on what I'd consider good MA answering form.

If you have a comment, make a comment under another users response - I know it doesn't earn points but hey is that all that this community is about?

Sorry to appear to 'call you out' @krysstel, but I just think that especially at a higher belt level, certain expectations exist for us all here at MA.

There is no way to comment directly about a question. That is a feature Mahalo needs to add!

But, is this even a question? Looks more like a statement or announcement to me, without actually asking anything.

Yes, this is more like a announcement, I believe Hillo is just responding to the act in general.

Thanks Dad!

I'd also like to point out that clicking "unhelpful" just because you disagree with someone is poor form. Being "unhelpful" and "disagreeing" with someone are two completely different things. Just because you disagree with someone does not make that person wrong. It's merely a different point of view.

That said, if you use a Rice Krispies Treats recipe to explain the physics of a black hole, THAT is unhelpful.

Yes, the same can be said for "helpful" votes, you could agree with somebody but their answer can be very "unhelpful" to the asker

I hope this is just a wave in the big blue Mahalo sea.

As long as we treat each each member how we would want to be treated ourselves, this problem should ebb like the next tide.

I know I think long and hard before ever using 'unhelpful', and hope that everyone does the same.

@krysstel I believe that specific picture is from the Book of Bunny Suicides (though I couldn't tell you where most his other ones come from haha)

If I ever click the "Unhelpful", I always put in an explanation. That way, the community grows and learns.

I DO find it difficult in those rare occasions that, not only is the answer unhelpful, but it's also plain wrong. Then the use might get a double hit from me - Unhelpful AND Refute Fact. Then I ABSOLUTELY must add a useful comment.

Good update Jeff!

Very important for folks to keep in mind that the concept behind the unhelpful button is to actually teach users--especially new ones--how to answer question really well.

Like DrMatt says, always state why you voted it unhelpful and how the person can make it better.

Also, no one should ever target a user and vote their answers down.... that type of hostility will not tolerated by the community (as we've seen!).

I'm wondering... would it be possible to have a dialogue box pop up when someone clicks the "unhelpful" button? Have a required comment be posted before the click will count against the answer? Or make it so only those that have already made a comment to an asnwer can click the helpful/unhelpful buttons all together?

Excellent points.

I would only add that this content should really be on an official page like

@Albanian, I agree, adding a 'comment' to a question feature will will help but it will not necessarily deter members from the "temptation" to answer a question in only a few words in order to score points. Sorry to be a grumpy gus on this one - I'm just interested in keeping us 'honest' here.

Excellent post. I rarely have voted unhelpful, but when I do I always note why I did so. Same thing if there is only one answer to vote on but it's not a good one. I tell the answerer why I voted "no best answer" so s/he can learn.
