maybe because it has "Answers" in it's name? And avatars are similar in one way only - they are illustrations...
there are plenty of differences though:
1. the purpose it to share knowledge, so it's designed for different kind of audience
2. you may embed videos, MP3s, Photos, etc. - makes way more fun to use
3. you may earn some real money - how cool is that? I bet there will be lots of folks with lots of free time just tipping away and competing for Mahalo dollars (that you may convert to real cash)
4. it looks better too

Why is Mahalo Answers so similar to Yahoo Answers?
The avatars are Yahoo Answers-esque and there are a number of other striking similarities.

I would say because when there is a pretty obvious way to deal with a problem, different people are going to arrive at the same answer independently. For example, automobiles were invented nearly simultaneously by several people in several countries, and they all looked pretty similar and operated pretty similarly to each other. That's especially true where people are trying to come up with something that will be intuitive.
