1. It's monthly just like an affiliate program because we need to do a fairly deep review of money being sent out (think fraud), and there are accounting costs associated with doing this.

2. Our first tip cycle will be for activity ending in January and will be sent on February 15th.

3. If you do not receive payment in 10 business days of the 15th contact Mahalo and we will track down the issue.

4. You have to request your payout by the end of the month.

5. At some point it would be cool if you could transfer this over to Amazon gift cards. Maybe we should talk to them about that. :-)

all the best,

Jason

It is very common for all money earned online to incur this sort of wait.

Most affiliate programs pay out monthly so that their accounting cycles are minimized. While Mahalo is certainly a lot different than an affiliate program, they do pay out and as a result likely have a revolving set of accounts to complete.

Right, it's the same reason people don't get paid after every work day--it's simply too much effort to perform the payouts all the time. It's common for a company to batch all the payments into one large bunch and do 'em all at once.

dbspringer, I get paid every day where I work, we have a commercial individual accounting system. I punch a clock and pay taxes like everyone else. It creates a less stressful environment on workers.
And allows workers to structure their own account on a per user bases.

"Accounting" works both ways.

Even more unfortunately, everyone that had earnings in December (rightly 40M$'s and over) won't even be seeing anything until next month (February), and I still don't think this is entirely fair.

I'm sorry i just can't justify it, especially in the current economic climate. If anything people should be able to request and have their funds transferred even earlier. To help people out.

I understand the accounting issues, I know how web apps and affiliate programs work, but why put people on such a tight leash ?
There will be more of an issue with individual accounting re-structuring then there would be with one affiliate program/site.

Call me what you want, but when it comes down to it, the people come first.

I'm certainly in no way connected to Mahalo xds, however I do have an intimate knowledge of the affiliate programs, processors, merchant accounts, accounting process, etc that it takes to run a payout system.

I'm not speaking of the Mahalo system, but if you're an affiliate of other programs, this might help:

The bottom line, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. The number one factor is income and expenses. In a traditional affiliate model, chargebacks and returns exist and are a major headache for accounting folks. While it's technically possible to refine a payout system that works in real time, there are few companies (especially today) willing to take the chance that they could be left with a negative number.

Instead, affiliate programs dictate that their affiliates are paid out monthly so that chargebacks and returns can be accounted for first.

Otherwise, affiliate programs and ecommerce sites would need to rely on a large amount of credit or secured funds. This isn't available to most online companies and as a result, they save money by both stacking accounting tasks and by reducing the chance of loss.

Rob, I agree, But i would rightfully assume that you would equally agree that if A advertised and serviced amount where in print and made available for the people that used the affiliate.

Then the proprietor of that system should follow threw on that or at the very least make arrangements to help users come to a reasonable compromise.

Having to wait an extra month in my case and others is simply unethical.

Also, Rob, let me make one thing clear.

I love this site, I know what it takes to run a Web 2.0 affiliate program. Me my family and my friends hope the very best for Mahalo, Its staff, and its patrons.

Breaking a rule now and again is ok if it helps everyone in the long run.

Mahalo wants to wait a month? That's fine by me.
But treat everyone that uses that system like adults and hold forum to their concerns allowing them to come to a reasonable compromise.

I hear ya brotha!

When I was new to making money online, this waiting thing really urked me too. It still does!

But once I got into a regular schedule of income and checks start coming in every week the schedule of one source over another really doesn't matter.

But again, I get what you're saying and agree.

Creating a monthly payment system is a standard way of dispensing funds. Since our system has so many functions, it makes it much easier for us to make sure all payments go out once a month instead of more frequently.

It will be a few months before we really know how this system works for our users. With only one month done, we expect many more users to request their tips in the coming months. Let us know how it works!

Actually thank you for pointing this out because personally I think there is some confussion and a gray area in the payments section. Because the dialogue box directly above the answer box sttes that f your answer is selected as the best answer, you'll earn $$ Mahalo Dollars. You can use Mahalo Dollars to fund tips on questions you ask, or you can request a payment via PayPal as soon as your balance exceeds 40 Mahalo Dollars. Each Mahalo Dollar is currently worth $$ when paid out via PayPal.".
So I wish someone in authority probably Jason himself should come out and clarify for us whether the 15th of the month is the valid payment date or whether you can get paid once your balance exceeds $Mahalo 40.Anyone?
Actually on further reading of the the issue on tip guidelines under "How will I get paid?",I have confirmed that payout is on the 15th of the next month, and in retrospect i think it makes sense for the simple purpose of harmonizing the accounting procedures and probably in adherence to the law.
