I just looked through my questions over the last 30 days or so. Looking at the questions I asked, the reasons for asking them are fairly varied... for example...
- To find the answer to a practical problem
In TweetDeck, how can I add myself to a group?
- To discover how people feel about something
It's 70 years since the start of World War II. What does the Second World War mean to you?
- To get reviews or suggestions about what would suit my needs
If I love The Wire, what other shows would I like?
- To discuss Mahalo community issues
Is there a good use for the "Uninteresting" button?
- For fun, and to have a stimulating conversation about something that interests me
Why do people who love technology also love The Lord of the Rings?
I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons too!

Firstly out of curiosity but also because I would like to see what answers are delivered by other users, often they are different than what I had come up with and this helps me further my knowledge in that area. Many of my interests are represented in the pages I manage so this is a double bonus as I will most of the time ask these questions *from* my pages to further that cause as well. I asked a question this morning from my Shih Tzu page regarding dogs and going outside in the rain. This is a mild form of updating our pages.
I also ask questions I know nothing about in pure curiosity to add information to my brain such as some recent questions on Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound. I do not manage pages in these areas but I might in the future.
I cannot recall a recent question I have asked or answered in order to start a discussion as my opinions are often in the minority and my responses and comments often get unhelpful votes or lead to arguments and that is counter productive to me. Sometimes this is just unavoidable and I try to respectfully bow out of the conversation.

The reason why I ask questions are the following:
When I do not know about something - This is very much straight forward. If I am interested in gaining knowledge in just about anything, I would ask it here. It is interesting because regardless of what you ask, you will often get meaningful responses and that is good. I remember once answering to a question about someone wanting to know where he could find a manual of a DVD that I never heard before. Believe it or not, I found that manual and obviously made someone happy that day:)
When I need other people's opinion - As an example, I recently asked a question about Website design what annoys you more. I asked this question to find out what other people thought about the subject. Consider this as a mini-survey, or a mini-poll or simply, to have an understanding of what's going on in other people's mind. It is very refreshing because, while you will find many different point of view's, there are certain things that normally are common to people. The later, is what I am looking for.

I ask question in areas I am interested in and for a couple of reasons. Mahalo is a great community that I had the unfortunate incident of joining late. I would recommend it to anyone in a flash. The reason why I ask questions are the following:

It is interesting because regardless of what you ask, you will often get meaningful responses and that is good. Besides asking questions to gain further knowledge on a subject, I ask to see if anyone else is interested in a particular subject matter, or get an opinion of something that I'm interested in. Mahalo is not only about asking questions and getting answers, but is a social networking site. For some reason, by asking questions and geting some answers, I feel more connected to the world. Also, most of the questions I ask, I cannot ask of my friends because they don't know or are not interested. And I am shy, so sometimes is hard to ask questions. Strangely, I actually feel a little less inhibited here. I'm more likely to get an answer I'm satisfied with here too. And it is in writing, so there is a record of it. Slowly, I am building a database of knowledge that is relevant to me. And it is fun to ask questions! Sometime, I ask silly questions too, for that reason. And I like to ask questions because people enjoy answering them. I feel by asking questions, I am contributing to the world. I ask questions to learn about myself. I ask questions, because in so doing, I also learn something new. duenhsiyen
