Who likes graphs? Got a couple here that show the growth of payment requests and M$ earnings.

The first one shows the number of payment requests each month:
http://imgur.com/O20gG.png

The second shows the total of Mahalo Dollars requested each month:
http://imgur.com/IfO5H.png

Just to put things in perspective, Mahalo Answers launched Dec 15 of last year, page managers/tasks launched June 2 of this year.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that's a very significant increase for October.

It would be interesting to see this as a line chart with a couple of other numbers plotted. I wonder if site traffic and overall earnings match up with these payout requests and how much of a difference (lag) there is between the Amounts Requested and the overall earnings.

Not that these things would do me a lick of good... just be interesting is all. I do like me some pretty charts :)

Right now we're seeing a spike because of two main factors:

1. People are starting to see their pages rank in search engines and thus get more traffic (and revenue share).
2. People are participating in barn raisings and how to articles in a big way.

In fact, we are now at over 200 howto articles per week! That number should go to 1,000 by the new year. 1,000 how to articles at M$10 all in (with the QC) = M$10,000 a week in just how to articles. That's our plan actually, to do 50,000 how to articles in 2010 and payout M$500,000 in doing so.

Think about that for a minute!!! :-)

I've gotta say - I see numbers like the 1,000 articles by the new year and 50,000 in 2010 and I'm set back a bit.

But it really seems like every time I'm not sure about something like this... it comes true... and then some.

So, this time... I'm on board... 50k how to articles... bring it on :)

Mahalo 2.0 was launched near the start of June.

There were a significant number of bugs, the site was down a lot, etc, etc. Many people waited to request their payouts so that they could verify that everything was correct. Some folks (myself included) threw caution to the wind and cashed out.

I wonder if this was the reason for the decrease?

Wow! I'm part of the September graph! LoL ^^

With this, I want to thank Mahalo for the big help! :) It helps a lot to have extra money for my expenses. I'm not earning much with my work, I even feel underpaid but with Mahalo there, everything seemed okay right now.

And now that Christmas is coming, I think I have to be extra hardworking in Mahalo! ^^

Like @chriswingate asked, I'm also wondering about the obvious drop off during June. I think I wasn't a member yet on that month so I extremely have no idea.

June 2008 was the month we introduced Mahalo Tasks and Page Management - So there were a lot of bugs and a lot of the users who earned money on Mahalo Answers in May 2008 spent a lot more time experimenting with the new features, yet as most people know the rewards of Page Management are not immediate, the grow over time.

This is really great to see!

My guess is that by this time next year we will have 1,000 contributors taking out M$500,000 a month.

Yep, you read that right.... we're going to rocked to 1,000 contributors and a half million Mahalo Dollars a month in 12 months.

Now, I could be wrong, but I've seen these curves before and they tend to continue. We have ~100 really great contributors right now. They are crushing it in terms of building new how to articles and pages. When vertical managers are introduced to the system in December we'll see another layer of growth.

Also, Mahalo 3.0 will be launching on November 16th and that should make this grow in faster.

Really exciting!!! Can't wait to see who made the most money this month!

Correct @buddawiggi THERE IS NO LIMIT!

The Wikipedia and About.com have tens of millions of visitors a month. In fact, the Wikipedia has 75M+ users in the United States alone. It has hundreds of million in the world.

We can be as big as the Wikipedia... in fact we can be BIGGER because the wikipedia will never have pages like:

Red Lobster Coupons
iTunes Gift Card
and
How to buy gold

The wikipedia has 3M articles, but Mahalo has the ability to build--literally--100M articles. Many of the articles Wikipedia will not build are some of the most monetizable... like DUI Attorney Los Angeles or . We can build these pages for users and in doing some take the 100k+ that Mahalo makes in AdSense a month right to 1M!

It's really exciting!

I agree with Jason that these trends will continue upward. I'm excited to see what is in store with the new features being launched soon.

Simply amazing. I know that October was such an exciting record-breaking month for ol' Gno, here. The husband and I are even planning to go out to dinner to celebrate!

....and then we're going to put that money towards a new mattress that we need so we can stop walking around like grumpy Quasimodos all day....

But first! We dine!

I'm very excited to see I wasn't the only one who really made the most of October.

Once again, I'd like to thank Jason Calacanis, and the entire Mahalo staff for this wonderful opportunity for freelance writers.

Here's to an even better November!

Very cool. I just put in my first payout request, and it's over $400 in less than a month of actual work. Pretty decent way to bring in extra cash, and the passive income potential is where it's at.

I hope that Mahalo keeps the level of quality and stays being a lucrative side job for me. :)

Two months *if* you make a great page that isn't competing with the big boys AND you get some links to your page.

There are no shortcuts in this process. We need to make a lot of high-quality pages, market them and keep updating them. If we do that we'll see Mahalo climb right into the top 100 sites on Quantcast.com.

If you're wondering if we can do that, well, we were the #500 site in May and now we're number 155.

So, we can make it to the top 100, but we need to do it *together* by building a LOT of high-quality pages that DESERVE to rank in the top 10.

No shortcuts!

Make great content!

I have to admit that when I first joined I was quite skeptical. I am a full time writer, single mother and full time college student. I support my son solely on my writing so it's a big deal to me to know if a sit is legit or not.

I write for a variety of sites. I like to keep a variety so that I don't get bored and I can continue to be self employeed even if one site goes down. I'm pretty pleased with Mahalo. A lot of the articles I write on other sites tend to be educational and medicinal. While they are fun at times, they can also get kind of boring.

I've sat back and watched when there were some issues to be ironed out here. I've asked questions and I've waited to see what the "real" outcome was going to be. Overall I'm pretty impressed. Mahalo is a novel concept with constant encouragement. The staff here have been extremely helpful and I appreciate that after having dealt with sites where some days I'm lucky if I get a response at all.

I enjoy being a part of the team here and I enjoy making the money that I am because I'm improving my writing/editing skills and having fun while I do it. I'm a big fan of enjoying my work..or finding a new job. I happened to get in at Mahalo when I was getting a bit burnt out on some other sites. So, I'm happy to see the growth since I plan to stick around a while! lol Okay, rant over and I'm just happy to be here!

Your projections, Jason, are inspiring and encouraging. I know I am constantly thinking of new topics for Mahalo pages and it is fun when I find that we already have the topic, but even better when I get the chance to create a new page.

M3 is coming November 16th and it contains a new design that will make the homepage and topic pages VERY easy to understand.

Plus we will have "vertical managers" at that time.... vertical managers are partners with the page managers in specific topic areas (i.e. gadgets or TV).

I wish I could spend more time building pages and making some real money! If I know I could devote time to this every single day, I'd be on the How To Team and would be claiming pages left and right! Right now, I'm just trying to answer questions and ask questions as they pop up and practice managing the few pages I have built! I can't wait to make this super profitable for myself and others as well! YAY tips!!!! :)

Hi Mike - nice figures! :-)

I'm not really sure what kind of answer you are looking for, but as you probably know, the old adage of "a picture is worth a thousand words" has come under fire a bit these days (mostly for network graphs, which tend to get pretty noisy, but even for bar and line graphs, which some experts are arguing would be more effective in table format). I have been working in the area of network graphs for some time now, and the "like/dislike" for network graphs is pretty heated these days!

See for example:
Title: Effective information visualisation: a study of graph drawing aesthetics and algorithms
Author: H. C. Purchase
The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering,
The University of Queensland, St. Lucia 4072, Qld, Australia
Source: Interacting with Computers, Volume 13, Issue 2, December 2000, Pages 147-162

Still, there is no mistake that your graphs make a powerful impression...

The guy who has been talking a lot about information visualization is professor Edward Tufte - he has a web site at:
http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/

Hope you find this interesting!

It's so fun being part of a growing site in it's infancy stages. I'm so glad I stumbled on this site! :)

My goal right now is to have 50-100 pages up over the next two months or so. Things seem to be going well - I have 16 up so far and I've only been here a short time.

This is one of the many sites I write for and has quickly become one of my favorites.

I have been trying to earn some "online" money for the past 18 months and have contributed to other Q&A sites, with a couple of low payouts, so they are trusted in my books. But I have NEVER come across a site that is so exciting to be part of, I almost "live" on Mahalo, it is certainly my second home anyway.

To see how quickly Mahalo's contributors and their incomes have grown inspires me with confidence to work harder and boost the energy I am going to need to create dozens of pages this month, its as simple as "the more you put in, the more you get out:" These charts prove it.

I desperately needed to make extra money as I have been unemployed and in dispute with a previous employer for 18 months and times have been hard, but it looks like I have found my saviour.

Thanks so much for making the graphs and posting them Mike! That is very encouraging. I have been focused on improving the quality of my pages and building up a good group of them, and also learning more about the mechanics of really being a good how to team member and everything that entails - and so my earnings have been almost flat while I do that. Seeing that the system really works will inspire me to trudge on and complete my quality control and learning curve so that I can surf with the best of them in the future! Thanks so much for the encouragement - I needed that! It is important to see that things can work out in advance so that you keep on being motivated to stay working long enough to get there too :)

This are some impressive numbers! I predict that these numbers will continue to increase rapidly as traffic continues to increase and more and more users join our site. Especially page managers should keep in mind that the money you make from managing pages is directly linked to traffic (although many other factors play a role), and should continue to increase as Mahalo continues to grow.
