When a question has been voted "interesting" and additional funds are added, who gets the additional funds (beyond the original tip)?

There have been questions which have been funded by Mahalo ($0.37) or by the asker ($1.00 minimum) which have then been voted "interesting" by others and funded additionally ($0.05 and up). When the asker awards best answer, who receives the additional funding - the questioner or the provider of best answer?

I can see where awarding the additional funds to the questioner would inspire better questions and more attention to answers (in terms of providing ratings and feedback), but I am unsure of how this feature works. Help?

Hi @windowshopping Good Question.

The team tipping feature is the feature you are talking about I believe. The added "interesting" votes and their corresponding coins are all given to the user who delivers the best answer along with the original tip amount whether it was originally funded by Mahalo or as in this case funded generously by you.

I wonder if in the future we will be able to have a system that will reward a great question with additional funds. I would like to see that as without the great questions great answers would be few and far between.

I don't think so, Buddawiggi. I just got best answer on a question that was funded with 1.00 by @Jasoncalacanis and me for a total of $1.05 and I got zip on money - nothing. I didn't even get the measly 35 or 47 cents that Mahalo usually gives because it was funded by 'interesting question' by Jason.

Where that 1.05 went to, I don't know, but it didn't come to me.

Then on another question, there was originally 1.00 for the question and then 'interesting questions' added another 1.30, but when I won the question as the best answer, all I got was the original dollar.

Where'd the other dollar thirty go? If it's not going to the asker for having a great question and it's not going to the answerer who gets best answer - does Mahalo keep it?

If so, would this change how you fund 'interesting' questions? I think it would for me.

Hi @michelleldevon That is interesting that you did not get the tips accordingly. You would want to let Mahalo know via Email. (contact@mahalo) with the question and answer thread so they can look at it. The very intention of tipping and team tipping is so the best answer gets the tips collectively (original funding and the team tips)

If you get to the "tips" section of your profile shown below you will find all the nickels and dimes so to speak that you have acquired from team tipping tips.

Here is a question asked a few days ago originally funded by Mahalo at 37 cents but @lon added a dollar and @ayla_zed added a quarter. When my answer was voted best the tips came to me and are reflected in my profile stats. these were the team tips that were on top of the original amount funded by Mahalo.

If you have found that you are not getting the tips you have earned then pleas contact Mahalo via Email or @jeffhoard directly as I have seen him clear up these issues in the past.

@buddawiggi !!! I found it, thank you, thank you! It appears the email they send out only shows the original amount, but when I went where you told me, sure enough I can see it there.

Man, I must be really bad at math to not notice it!

(hangs head in shame)

I was wrong.... I'm sorry!

The tips are certaintly supposed to get paid out the way @buddawiggi says, and mostly they do.

There does seem to be an occcasional bug in which when you add a team tip, it's subtracted from your balance but not added to the pot.

Like with this question:

http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-community/why-do-you-ask-questions-on-mahalo

The total tip is showing as M$1.10, though the three added tips would make it M$1.35.

The Tips (also known as team tips) are an additional incentive for people to answer the question. They also can have the added bonus of making the question rise on the front page into the tipped question area, where they are likely to attract more attention from people on Mahalo Answers.

When a 'Best Answer' is selected, but the asker (or by vote if the asker didn't choose a best answer) the extra tips go to the person who gave the best answer.

Hope that helps...

Are you absolutely certain this is how it works? If so, then I've been shorted some money. Read my response to @buddawiggi above to see why I'm saying this.

In a flash of panic Psionandy jumps up and looks at his tip box... in addition to the tips of 25c and 37c he can see smaller ones of .10c, .9c, .50c in addition to the main tip for each question..

he breathes a small sigh of relief, happy that his treasure hasn't been stolen....

Its possible that some database glitch has robbed you of your tips.. try sending a message to one of the staff or use the contact link if you're not sure. The problem with my checking is that the tips aren't visible in the question once the best answer has been checked.... so all i have is some circumstantial evidence that i've been getting the right amount.

@philipy....

Thats an 'interesting one'.

I originally asked that question as an untipped question. @buddawiggi was kind enough to add a team tip, and I decided that on reflection I did care about the answer enough to tip it.

When I added the tip however it didn't go up to the full $1,25 I expected it to.. however as a result of his tip the person who does win it will get an extra 63c so its a different case from the other 'phantom' tips....

@psionandy That exact issue has happened to me before. I asked an untipped or funded by Mahalo question and within a few seconds another user had added a nickel in team tipping. Like you upon further reflection i decided to add a tip and did so using the button provided. The users added nickel disappeared and the total value of the question was now $1 not $1.05 like I would have thought.

I reported this in the September bug thread but have not heard anything more on the "phantom tips".
