Answered Question
What's your favorite thing about Mahalo?
I've spent a couple of days behind development desks and I know how heavy hearing things like this can get. So, I thought that along with all of the bug reports, concerns and problems that it might be fun to think about what makes Mahalo so great.
Answer with your single most favorite feature. Best answer goes to the person with the most votes after Wednesday's Mahalo Tutorial.
I'll start with this:
My favorite Mahalo feature is how easy it is to tip someone. With nothing more than a click, a quick input and a submit, I can quickly give someone a couple of M$'s for a great answer. It's very smooth.
Interesting: ssmacd M$0.05, buddawiggi M$0.25, philipy M$0.05, easyeboy M$0.05, jeffhoard M$2.60, brian san M$1.00, lesliec M$0.25, lauriem M$0.25, davepamn M$0.25, jfs M$0.50

Lots of friendly, helpful and knowledgeable people. And not full of themselves, even with all that knowledge! Even the staff are adorable. :)
Oh... you meant an actual feature? People aren't a feature...?
In that case, the ease of voting things helpful. It's nice to get helpful votes, and it's nice to give them when you see a good answer.

Tip cferroggiaro for this answerI used to do nothing but answer questions here, maybe ask one now and again, but over the past 10 weeks I have been understanding just how easy, fun and educational working on these pages is and now answering questions is something I do while I'm taking a break from tinkering with my meager 14 pages.
I can see myself in the future as time permits getting more and more involved as the ins and outs of page creation become easier and easier, hopefully steadily increasing the number of pages I have created and manage.

Tip buddawiggi for this answerSo I would say.. Jump right in the water is fine.. Find a topic you are interested in and just go for it.
Oh yea.. I'm still cleaning up the mess of a page I made in my first attempt but it's coming along great and I discover or learn new things everyday

Tip redgold for this answerI love the variety of questions that have been asked ... ranging from opinions on where to go eat in this town, to history questions, to modern events. I've ended up doing a lot of research in order to answer questions and in doing so, have learned a thing or ten ;-)
I know I still have so much to explore here at Mahalo, including getting my butt in gear and working on the 2 pages I claimed, as I have a high interest in both of them.
Thank you to the dedicated staff here at Mahalo for working so hard to make this site run as smoothly as the script and code gods will allow. While there is still a lot of social media aspects here, it is still vastly different enough that it is a breath of fresh air from the constant social media barrage.
Kudos, two thumbs up, standing ovation, etc etc. =)

Tip easyeboy for this answerAs was mentioned in a recent question, many of the reasons people switch from other question/answer sites to Mahalo is the way the staff here really listen to their users. And people like @jeffhoard do an amazing job of keeping questions and answers on track and troll free. Plus, I don't know of too many places where the CEO is so involved in his product.
Also to some extent, I think many regular users of Mahalo are a kind of extended staff. People here are always willing to help out new users. It all leads to a great community atmosphere.
A close second is Mahalo Dollars. Though at least for me the goal is not to make a living off of the site, making a few bucks for putting effort into Mahalo is a very rewarding feeling!

I havent heard of any other site where the staff is very much like regular users just with some extra power including @jasoncalacanis. Of course they have a different motivation, but still the involvement makes this site very interesting.
I like this atmosphere more than anything else in spite of all the bugs which are in the process of being exterminated. But is that a special feature of this site? if so that is the best and my favorite feature.
All the other features are a bonus.
Mahalo team - thank you.

Tip stanar for this answerThere are also so many other features here that are unique - like embedding photos and videos to your question/answer, getting real answers to question as opposed to just smart ass remarks that you'd get from some place like Yahoo Answers, the ability to earn tips for a good answer - and to reward someone for a good answer, and of course the Mahalo pages that we can manage and earn ad revenue from. All of this together wrapped up in a nice little package is the best feature on Mahalo.
Mahalo is so addicting. I don't think I've ever gone a day without coming here. If there was as way to put Mahalo in a bottle, I'd be a total junkie. :)

I'm still a relatively new user (12 points from my green tip!), but I've already started to learn a lot of the regular faces around here. Of course @robbrown, @gno, @soundboy, @philipy, @mithrandir, @spoon, @buddawiggi are all great members who I've already noticed for their standout work in the community (I'm leaving out many more that just aren't coming to me right now). The great thing is that it's hard to tell the difference between the staff and the users when you first start the site, and that's how it should be. If it weren't for a few indicators, it could take you days before you realized Lon, Jeff, or even Jason were staff.
And while the features are all very well and good, they would all mean nothing without the people who use it. The right community has really made this site shine, and even a newcomer like me can really see the results. What good are Mahalo dollars without people to share (and fight over) them with? What good are search pages if they're created by a community that doesn't get it?
What is comes down to for me, is that I can see myself still using Mahalo in a year, two years, or even 10 years down the road because the community here is so fantastic. I have never felt this loyal to an online community in so short a time.
Thanks everyone, for making Mahalo a welcoming and enjoyable place!

Tip besodenena for this answersomeone asked me just a couple of hours ago why i'm here since it's obvious i do so many other things on the web... basically, what draws me to mahalo. this is a more complete answer to his question...
to me mahalo is many things... and i think the little flower that is the mahalo icon is very appropriate because mahalo has many layers. each petal represents something about mahalo that is special, and great. and all the things i'm going to list are important in their own way, so picture them not as a list of first, second, third choice, but as petals on the flower that makes up mahalo... going round and round.
the whole mahalo platform is like nothing i've ever seen before, and i've been on the web a very long time. it has similarities to many other sites, but goes beyond any one of them.
Staff - the staff is phenomenal! i just can't say it enough. i say it at least once a day, usually more. they are so available and so helpful. even when they have to let someone know they can't word something a certain way or they can't do exactly what they want, they are polite, friendly, and very helpful... often offering suggestions as to how to improve.
everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute in some way and move up to greater participation opportunities. there is really something here for everyone... as you will see as i continue
mahalo answers - everyone can ask just about anything on just about any subject, and will usually receive a very prompt answer... often that answer is well researched regardless of how much the tip is. everyone can also try their hand at answering questions. and the way mahalo has it set up, with suggestions and helpful tips, even when someone doesn't give the answer that is being looked for, they can learn from that and give a better answer.
the community... the majority of the mahalo community is not out for themselves, or selfish in any way. i've only been here a little less than a month and i've witnessed compassion and helpfulness, togetherness and a willingness to help others better themselves, either through comments, or suggestions, pointing them to resources that can help or even just tipping someone for a great answer. i've seen people give lessons on how to research and give better answers, and in fact, even in a recent brown belt test saw how staff had stepped up to help someone learn to answer better and get a greater ratio of best answer picks. that not only helps that person, but contributes to the community as well.
mahalo pages - this is a fabulous resource to outside people as well as those of us who know about mahalo. i found mahalo through one of these pages. looking for a digital recorder last month landed me on a mahalo page for the exact model of recorder i was researching... which led me to the next petal...
page management - that page i landed on was unclaimed... and i thought, ''what is that? how can i make up to $50 a page?" so, even though i didn't need that page anymore, i saved it to come back and see what it was about. and i am really glad that i did, for all the reasons i'm giving. mahalo offers the opportunity for anyone to make a page or claim a page that is made but unclaimed and learn to use language on the web to present that topic to many many others. using language on the web is not like talking to someone. there are skills that you automatically learn on mahalo in managing pages that you can carry with you to other areas of the web if you want to continue your education. it also gives those users the opportunity to explore a given topic. i've learned a lot about a lot of topics since coming here... just by doing the pages and tasks... next petal...
Mahalo tasks - these are awesome! if you haven't taken the opportunity to do a task yet, i urge you to try it. and don't give up if it doesn't come easily at first. there is a little bit of a learning curve, but staff are right there with you giving suggestions. by doing a task, you have a specific focus to do research, and you are given a starting place for that research. you are presented with specific facts you need to look for and types of information they need you to present. it helps you to learn how to make a mahalo page from the research side, and then you can claim that page and reap the rewards...
Rewards - this one is so amazing. i think some people take it for granted, but Mahalo really wouldn't have to reward us for anything.. wikipedia doesn't... but it is another thing that Mahalo has improved upon. here you get rewarded for almost every single thing you do... either in M$ - mahalo dollars or in points, which gives you higher belt levels where you can do more of the things that earn you Mahalo dollars. and then... those mahalo dollars can either be gifted back into the community as tips to others, or cashed out!
... continued in comment because apparently my answer is too long and chokes the system =D

just my 2 cents... or 10, 20, whatever... =)

IRC Chat - this is an area of mahalo that i literally would never want to be without. most of you probably don't even know about it or how to get there. (quick tutorial - i use firefox, downloaded the chatzilla plugin, went to freenode.net and signed up, then went to channel #mahalo) once you get there, you can ask questions of other users and staff in real time. priceless when you run into a problem that needs immediate attention. very helpful when you have questions on tasks... and i never saw a company that had staff that was so AVAILABLE... and still friendly about you interrupting their day. =)
Contact email - this one is really unusual. you may not be aware that when you have a problem or question and you send a message to contact@mahalo.com that it goes not just to some nameless box that someone checks once in a while... but it goes to multiple people all the way up the chain that can help you. your answer might come from different people at different times, but it is usually pretty fast. more hidden efficiency at work.
Hours - many websites have set hours of operation and you can't get live help outside of those hours. well, i'm here to tell you that i've seen my tasks approved past midnight PST, and i've talked to staff that late as well. they have done an amazing job of having someone on and available *almost* around the clock. i don't know if it is actually 24/7, as i do sleep sometimes, so i'll leave it at that to be accurate =)
Additional perks - for those like me who do business on the web, mahalo presents a unique testing ground for keyword research and topic research. it gives me insight into things that i would have to spend more time on elsewhere or run a big ad campaign to find out. i can test it here and mahalo benefits financially if it goes well, if not, it still adds to the content. this would take a lot of explaining for those who don't know what i'm talking about, but for those that do... believe me, you can do a page on a keyword here and get a unique perspective as to how it would do on another site.
Transparency - i like that so much is open here. i can look at others' profiles and follow other conversations they are having if i find they have similar interests to me. i have run into some interesting mahalo questions that way. and everyone can see stats and know if someone is more experienced in MA or page management, so if they have a question that they want to pose to another member, they can do so directly, knowing how many questions that person has answered and whether they give great answers most of the time.
Voting - WE decide who answers those questions the best, and which questions are the most interesting. mahalo really gives us, the users, a lot of control over our community.
Direct Questions - we can ask another member a question directly and securely as no email addresses or personal information is used.
i'm sure i'm forgetting something, there are so many petals i'm bound to miss one.
so, rob, i apologize that i can't just give an answer that details one area of mahalo that i like the best. and i'm sorry if i rambled on too long.
truth is, if any of those were missing, the whole experience would be less rewarding...
but if i had to sum it all up in one sentence...
what i like best about Mahalo is how it makes me feel... for all the reasons above and whichever ones i forgot to include.
=)

I've found the answers by certain members outstanding.
It seems that the really great answers have a pattern of repeating their performance.
I have found the point seekers can't sustain themselves in consistently winning an answer.

Tip sunshine09 for this answerThe staff is awesome and the members are amazing. I love to ask questions and know that someone is going to help me out with a well thought out answer and can give me a different perspective.
I also love working on pages and making them better by going back daily and looking at them as a viewer then making little changes that will make them more effective or attractive.
I have so much I love about this Mahalo site!
