What is the actual value of 'helpful votes', when a questioner can simply choose another answer as 'best'?

In this question: http://www.whatsyourconundrum.com/belief-and-thought/does-barack-obama-really-deserve-the-novel-prize-for-peace, several answers got multiple 'helpful answer' votes, my own answer even got 5 helpfuls (and one unhelpful). However , the questioner chose an answer that got no votes at all.
Now, I don't care about this particular question, the chosen answer is fine too, but it did get me wondering about the actual value of a 'helpful' vote. Is there any, apart from when the asker doesn't choose a 'best' at all?

The way that Mahalo works is that the questioner has the absolute right to pick whichever answer they think is 'best'

and their definition of 'best' is whatever they like. Helpful votes are just a way for other people to say they think the answer is helpful without having to write a comment. If it didn't exist then in your example 5 people would have wrote comments saying "yes thats helpful" which wouldn't really add a lot to the conversation.
Asker's Rating:
• Most 'helpful' votes, therefore best answer, the way it should be :)

It seems the conundrum in question is loaded with bias as you must know already the asker of that conundrum simply chose the answer with the heaviest anti-Obama rhetoric.

This quote from that answer made me cringe

"An otherwise well intentioned man looking buffoonish."

~endquote

I will now get around to answering the question. I feel the anonymous helpful/unhelpful voting system in ConundrumLand has "no value whatsoever". Anonymous votes can be loosely flung without consequence and without a name attached to the vote the vote means little to me. I hope in the future the names are reattached to the current votes shedding a possibly embarrassing light on unthoughtful voting and voters.

I would think the helpful/unhelpful system would be just as good gone as to continue anonymous.

I wondered why I couldn't see the names of helpful/unhelpful voters on Conundrum questions - I had no idea it was purposefully anonymous!

What a waste of time that is...

If I'm not mistaken, should the asker not choose the best answer in the allotted time, whichever answer has the most "helpful" votes, or possibly the highest "helpful" minus "unhelpful" will get picked automatically as the best answer.

If that's not how it is currently done, it should be :).

Indeed, that's the ONLY added value I've found so far for the 'helpful answer' votes.

That's not the way it's done - you should know that by now, @mithrandir!

When the asker does not choose a best answer in the allotted time, for whatever reason, the question goes to voting in the "Undecided" tab.

Please go here for a full explanation http://www.mahalo.com/answers/help

The "helpful" and "unhelpful" votes we give have nothing to do with who gets the best answer.

lily, as far as I know, those 'undecided' votes count as 'helpful' votes too..

Here is another fact, I think.Actually @mith I thought about it before.

Please view the questions. This questions are totally opinion based question .When you are a asker, you also have a opinion but now, you want to know other peoples opinion and when a person will answer, supporting your opinion this answerer will must deserve a good place to asker. to be best answer.

Here is a question to-people-oppose-to-president-obama-winning-the-noble-prize-for-peace-can-anybody-nominate-a-better-recipient-for-the-noble-prize-for-peace Here asker is @apicurus. I think he believe that "no one" but I said there "yes has another one"

Please view my last comment...I made this comment when @keepontryi said that @api don't want any answer, he just wanna give lecture. He(kee) said it because @api added a comment in my answer. Please view that. But I don't know why I can not view this comment of @keep.

Here is another some questions like this question f-religion-had-never-existed-in-your-opinion-would-that-have-been-a-good-thing-yes-or-no-why-do-you-think-this here also must has a personal opinion of asker.

I think that even if you don't get the "best answer", it feels good to know that your effort researching info about some question, or your knowledge about, has been found to be useful for some users!
