The number one trait a quality question will have is clarity.
If the person who asks a question is 100% clear as to what they are asking the question will inspire the best answers possible.
Almost everything else is subjective. Each person will determine what they like or dislike in questions personally.
The one thing that is not subjective is tip. In my experience even a poor question will inspire decent answers if there a tip involved over the 25 cent default tip funded by Mahalo.
My personal tastes vary by my mood and can cross a wide spectrum.

Each of these questions was quality to me at the time and might not have been so to anyone else.
It's too late for me to make this long story short so back to the beginning. The best questions will be the ones which most clearly define exactly what they are looking for.

1. Clarity - the question is complete in the details needed for an answerer to understand what the asker is looking for.
2. Sincerity - the asker needs the information, opinion, or arguments s/he's asking for.
3. Availability of information - the question has one or more answers and these are available to the public, either through online search or from expertise.
4. Ethical - the question is not obviously a homework or take-home exam question, where the asker is trying to get others to do his/her work-for-grading.
5. Interest - although questions seeking a simple fact are fine, they are not the Lexus of questions. To be considered quality, a question should elicit one or more nuanced answers, where different opinions or positions can be presented, contrasted, analyzed, and synthesized into a final answer. The highest quality questions will allow the talented answerer to shine.

Answered Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
What, in your mind, would comprise a quality question?
Okay, I'm new here and I'm trying to figure out how to best fit in. I've read some of the FAQ and the How-To Pages and joined the live Tutorial on October 28th. (Lon scared me at first in his wizard costume but I soon got over that!)
I've noticed a trace of discontent here about the declining quality of questions. So I was just wondering what everyone thought would make up a good question.
Also, don't you think that after a while all of the good questions have been asked and it takes someone really intuitive to ask a great question?

A quality question would have the following attributes (and yes, I know I'm borrowing some of these from Buddawiggi and silverhammer).

I agree with all of the above, as well as add the depth of the answer required. I personally think good questions go above and beyond a yes or no answer, and make me think about what I'm going to say. What did you have for breakfast is not exactly a quality question. Then again, I'm also still fairly new to this scene. :)

You're right @kaliekat that many questions have been asked before, but what I've found is that when they reappear a month or so later, you'll have a different group of people respond with some interesting and new answers.
So don't be afraid to ask something you know has probably been posted before. You can also use some of the key words in your question and enter them in the search bar above to see if a similar question was posted just a few days ago.
