A points system is one of those things that is really difficult to get the right "feel" for until you have a bunch of users actively participating in the system. It seems it was just a liiiiitle too easy to advance, so the system had to be adjusted.

The current scale ensures that users will have to be very involved longer to max out and get tired of the site, and also helps to ensure that newer users feel like they are still on the leading edge of this site's creation, since even the all-time greatest users are still green belts now.

I think how it is currently set up is very good -- although I would have liked to have kept my green belt after the change :) The current scale ensures that users will have to be very involved longer to max out and get tired of the site, and also helps to ensure that newer users feel like they are still on the leading edge of this site's creation, since even the all-time greatest users are still green belts now.
