What do you think of online encyclopedia links frequently used as Mahalo answers?

When is it appropriate, or not, in your opinion?

What are the pros and cons of of showing online encyclopedia content in an answer? Especially when these resources are widely known already?

Hopefully sharing ideas here can help educate others and improve the Mahalo system.

Well, its fine to include one, but if you don't summarize the information relevant to the question, you're only one step better than just telling people to look in Wikipedia. For a large tip on an important question, Wikipedia may not be good enough - follow the footnotes to the primary sources.

I'm a newbie but I don't see Mahalo as trying to duplicate an online encyclopedia. Those pages tend to be static. Mahalo has the advantage of pulling in different realtime sources: news, videos, images. Mahalo is a consolidator of content and the reader must decide what content is valuable for their purposes (whereas a Wikipedia page can be trusted more or less).

I actually think Mahalo should have something like related pages for encyclopedia entries (eg wikipedia).
