maybe a more equitable way to stimulate the Mahaloconomy could be for questions that are tipped the M$.25 by Mahalo can be matched by the person who asks the questions. Leave the self tipped questions alone, no need to rock that boat. But on a question that Mahalo applies a tip to, that amount (which currently is the M$.25) is matched by the person who asked the question. So then it brings the tip total to M$.50 and that could also be a way to have people ask a little higher quality question if they have to pony up some dough. Kill two birds with one stone, increase the tips and increase the quality. This would accomplish what you are recommending without putting a huge demand on the users.

I can't really afford to spend any of that on tips. =/ What can I say, the economy and my divorce have messed up the stability that I used to have and I'm just scrambling to stay afloat until I find a second income.

What do you guys think of this suggestion to improve tips?
We all are faced with this debate: re-tip our tips or cash them out?
I've come up with a compromise:
1. A portion of all tips goes into a separate pile of money from our balance. (Heck, it could be just the 25% that Mahalo takes when we cash out.)
2. That separate pile of money CANNOT BE CASHED OUT. Instead, it must be used as tips.
3. Money in that separate pile expires if you ask 3 questions without putting it up as a tip. This prevents people from sitting on their money.

Well, if users have to pony up cash, then that isn't exactly self-tipped, is it?

Mahalo, probably.
Basically, for anyone who didn't understand, it means that a certain percentage of our tip money (15%, 25%, whatever) HAS to be used towards further tips, not cashing out.
Stimulating the mahaloconomy, if you will.

To be bluntly honest, the one and only reason I even came to this website was to earn some spare cash. I know that probably sounds greedy or whatever but I'm divorced, I've been left with bills that my husband and I used to pay together... and I can't support them alone. My one job can't support it all by itself, I keep applying around for a second job but everything's falling through. So while I work towards landing a significant second income, I'm doing every "earn a lil here, a lil there" website that I can. If I can pull in $40/month from one website, $20/month from another, etc. it'll all add up and at least it'll cover a food shopping or a bill. I can't really afford to spend any of that on tips. =/ What can I say, the economy and my divorce have messed up the stability that I used to have and I'm just scrambling to stay afloat until I find a second income.

Hence that part of my suggestion - the required tips come from the 25% that Mahalo keeps whenever we cash out our accounts.

@angilla It doesn't sound greedy at all. I respect that you're doing all that you can to pay the bills.
There's no reason why anyone needs to ask a question ever, unless they want to know the answer.
One of the good things about Mahalo is that people can use it in all different kinds of ways. Some just want to pop by to get one question answered, some enjoy the challenge of writing great answers and do it for fun, and some can use the extra bucks. All these uses are legit!

@oboewan:
Sorry, I've only been around Mahalo for a few days and don't know how everything works yet. :) Actually I don't know how most things work... LOL... I've figured out how to tweak my profile and answer questions, I figure the rest will come with time and use, haha.
@philipy, thank you. :)
