I've a few weeks from completing my PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, so I feel like I have quite a bit to contribute to Science-related questions. Before I became a scientist, I was a chef. I trained at the School for Culinary Arts in Denver, and worked in Denver and New Orleans for several years. Food is now my hobby rather than my profession, so I really like Food questions. One of my current obsessions is new and innovative cocktails.
I have a fairly long history with Q&A sites, first starting with the Ask-A-Scientist service run by http://Madsci.org. I've answered questions for them for about 2 and a half years. You can see a list of questions I've answered here: http://www.madsci.org/cgi-bin/search?query=William+Gunn
I've also been fairly active on http://Ask.Metafilter.com, having been a member there for almost 4 years. You can see my history here: http://www.metafilter.com/activity/22919/comments/ask/
I've done more asking than answering on LinkedIn, and I don't think I can link directly to my question history, but my profile is here: http://www.linkedin.com/in/williamgunn

My other specialty is intellectual property and my inventiveness! I'm brilliant with creative ideas, inventing new concepts, coming up with words, marketing slogans, creative catch phrases, new domain names etc. This makes me very creative in some ways... Like, the other day, some guy asked, "What's so special about using an onion to clean your grill?" I invented a new gadget that would clean the grill. That's just one example, and this is something I do every day of my life! I have more inventions, creative thoughts, and pondering things going on in my mind than anyone else does. It's also sometimes problematic, especially when you get fixated on a big idea...
To prove this, look at this answer to this question. I thought of all these domain names off the top of my head, and fact checked them all.
Find a new (and available) domain name for me and get $5 tip.

Below is an example of a website review I recently annotated. I believe I am the only person in the world to have written about this site exactly like this.
The Next Big Sound
http://www.thenextbigsound.com
The Next Big Sound provides a player to listen to the short demos of unsigned artists and you can sign the ones you think will become famous to your own record label. You'll find plenty of demos land on the desks of record label talent scouts each week and only a small fraction of these songs ever reach the general public. Listen to artists during the most exciting stages of their careers and be the one who discovers the next big sound. The filter allows you to look at them randomly or by new artists as well as by genre, whether it's rock, jazz, or blues. Sections include Charts, Sign Up, Log In, About, Blog, Merch, Artist Sign Up, and Terms.

1) Education
It's my line of work and where my passion lies. I haven't seen too many education-related questions here, but I always get excited when I do see them.
2) Beauty and Style
I love helping people with beauty and style related questions, especially if it involves specific products or fashion. I have a bit of a beauty product addiction, and I have a lot of first-hand experience to share.
3) Shopping
I get a thrill from shopping, especially when I can find a good deal on things. I love helping other people find specific items or good deals on certain things. It makes me feel triumphant, and I get a rush from it. Sad, I know.

First, photography. I love to help people get set up, learn the basics of photography, and help people learn about the equipment, and, frankly, how little it matters. Frequently, I have answered some photo questions with such zeal that I've overwhelmed the askers with information. Probably half of my posts to open ended questions result in a flurry of typing that ends up well for the person on the receiving end:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/photography/what-model-camera-dslr-would-you-recommend-to-a-beginner-preferably-a-canon
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/photography/why-do-you-need-uv-fluorescent-polarizer-filters-for-your-dslr-what-these-filters-do
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/cameras/should-i-buy-a-new-dslr-lens-or-new-dslr
I'd help with photography related questions, but people tend to be more interested in the cameras themselves for some reason, so I play that game too. ;)
Computers. They've been a hobby for a large portion of my life, and I've always been decent at soaking up new information, so I'm never really out of date. I build them as a hobby (for cash or favors), and help experienced builders that aren't up to date with selecting parts. I'm a pretty good troubleshooter (particularly hardware) and know Windows better than most that just have computers as a hobby (though many eclipse me here).
Some examples are:
https://www.mahalo.com/answers/technology-and-internet/when-did-selecting-a-video-card-become-so-insane-any-recommendations
https://www.mahalo.com/answers/monitors/lcd-refresh-rate-and-viewing-comfort-should-i-get-a-video-card
I also like to game. Board games, computer games. Again, some of my responses involve an excited fury of typing:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/video-games/would-you-please-describe-your-most-authentic-gaming-experience-please-read-details
https://www.mahalo.com/answers/casual-games/can-you-help-me-find-a-good-twoperson-game
I also like meta-discussions on many topics. Discussions about the discussion/aspects of the topic itself, as opposed to direct questions are things that fascinate me. Unfortunately, I haven't seen too many of these on here, but when I do, I'll probably have an answer/opinion on the matter.
In many areas, I'm a bargain hunter. I refuse to pay a lot of money for things, and have always been good at getting the best deals, be it haggling to get a car at invoice, putting my PCs together, and taking my hard earned cash as far as I can take it, given that I'm not rich and have a number of rather expensive hobbies. If I buy it, I know how to get something that's better and or cheaper than what most people know of (I should specifically state "more capable and cheaper").

That's probably not my specialty though. I think my specialty is either the Beatles or the Simpsons. I've heard pretty much every Beatles song out there, and I read everything I can on the topic from enormous encyclopedic books like "the Beatles Anthology" to the smallest Beatle-related Wikipedia article. I don't know what it is about the topic that interests me, but it's probably because there is so much history behind the group; also, they play some good rock music.
I've seen nearly every Simpsons episode, a bunch of times. I'm one of those obsessive fans who memorizes quotes and looks for specific places to put them in a normal conversation.
Unfortunately, there are only two Simpsons questions on here (both answered long ago) and one Beatles question (asked by me).

• The fact that you went from a chef to a scientist is a very enjoyable fact and strangly make sense, I know a few people going to culinary school and a few people in the science field. I had never thought about how similar some of them seem to be!!

The Internet! Researching the Internet, finding facts, checking facts, reviewing websites, finding information online, and regurgitating it in different ways. My specialty is keeping up to date with everything on the web, even though it moves quickly. I have written and/or annotated over 100,000 websites in the past 3 years. I love collecting websites and reviewing them, yet have not published all of my work. I hope to someday create a master directory of the Web that works with a search engine. I am personally passionate about answering questions on any sort of topic as well, yet there is a limit to how many I can answer. My other specialty is intellectual property and my inventiveness! I'm brilliant with creative ideas, inventing new concepts, coming up with words, marketing slogans, creative catch phrases, new domain names etc. This makes me very creative in some ways... My specialty is art and photography and feel that is my area of expertise, I have a degree and a lot of life experience with photography and art but unfortunately there have only been a very small handful of photography questions. I get very excited on the rare occasion I get to share my knowledge. I kind of use mahalo as an exercise to brush up on popular topics that I should know more about, in researching the questions I get to learn a lot and also get to learn how to learn efficiently, with soundbites that are actually useful. I've discoverd all sorts of research tools, one of my favorite secret tools which I will share with you now is....www.tineye.com this is a website which can upload an image and it searches the internet and finds all the images that have similar features, great for research subjects when all you have to go on is an image. I am glad that finally there is a visual search engine that searches using imagery rather than text, I would have thought google would have been able to do that long ago but I guess tineye beat them to it.

ZOMG over limit again.
I've got some other minor interests. Football (American), food (more eating, but sometimes cooking), beer, and questions on these topics can all elicit a long, detailed response that go far, far beyond what other people may have the patience to write.
Part of the size of my replies is just related to the fact that I can type this stuff up pretty quickly, and know when I'm referring to a link what it is, where it is, and what is in it before I even type my response, so I'll literally just belch out 2 pages of text with some links and just check them after and edit for consistency, because I've had an interest in the topic, know where the information is, and know what/how to use it off the top of my head.

My speciality is Fibromyalgia. This is a medical condition that most doctors don't want to bother to learn about. Most doctors abuse patients who have fibromyalgia because they don't beleive it exists. I have found that I know more about the condition than doctors because I have spent yeasr educating myself and particiapting in research studies. I figured out on my own that it is a neurological disorder-not a rheumatological disorder before most doctors--it is now commonly accepted to be believed to be a neuro disorder. This condition can be very debilitating-I was recently forced to take medical leave form a career I worked in for 21 years....

My main areas of expertise ( http://williamgunn.org/WilliamGunn-CV.html ) are bone biology, stem cell biology, and cancer biology, at the cellular and molecular level, but I do have extensive experience with animal models, as I used them to study the stem cell/cancer interaction in the bone marrow compartment.
Would i be correct in saying that cancer cells would *eventually* take over any stem cells used in the body ?
(Unless otherwise bonded with a WORKING vaccine)
(and since there is no cure for cancer that my assumption would be correct?)
????
1. Clarify what effects of cancer are we talking about. Are you asking if blood cells can become cancerous?
2. Clarify what you mean by synthesized. Do you mean newly produced by the body?
3. Repost your new question as a separate question, in the biology category.
