Great question. Soon you're going to be able to see your friends activity in the sidebar on the right. So, if you're friends with Drmatt and easyeboy you'll see a) if their online (if they are ok with that) and b) what their last behaviors were.
so, imagine for a moment if the homepage of Mahalo Answers was a combination of:
a) your friends activity
b) your activity
c) questions you would be able to answers or be interested in reading (based on your previous behavior)
d) the most interesting questions on the site as voted by users
e) the biggest tips in the system
f) the most comments on a question
g) topics you check off you're interested in (i.e. iPhone or Blackberry)
Your front page will be customizable and very, very smart.
This will allow us to go from 300 questions a day to 3,000 without the homepage feeling out of control/inane (one person's inane is another person's brilliant).
It's going to be amazing. We will have a new director product starting at Mahalo soon and they have some excellent ideas of how to do this from their past experiences. Can't wait for the community to meet them.

As with some things here in Mahalo Answers, there might be a time when it becomes useful... but for now, not so much so.
In the meantime... Have some M&Ms!

I think there could be in the future some interesting extensions using this, but for now, it's just part of the atmosphere.
And here is a little something for you: your own parking spot here!

On Mahalo, it can mean someone spent a few hours figuring out how to make the @*^K! link to "add as friend" work, which is a very nice gesture.
Happy Friday!

Answered Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
What are friends for?
I'm not really asking about life in general. This is a specific question about Mahalo friends. What are the effects of having someone as a Mahalo friend? What is the purpose of this feature? Who has tried it?

• I look forward to the new features. The friends bit will be worth trying although I'm not so sure about its usefulness.

That sounds great! It should make all the difference. And it also answers my question.

As with some things here in Mahalo Answers, there's no real reason for Friends or Fans beyond the "We share this in common and support each other" thought process. As with some things here in Mahalo Answers, there might be a time when it becomes useful... but for now, not so much so.
In the meantime... Have some M&Ms!

I think friends here in Mahalo land are just to foster the sense of a helpful community of goodwill. As we read answers, answer questions and ask them we can get a sense of people. Sometimes I'll read something someone else has written, and it's just what I was about to say. So I'll friend them. In voting, sometimes I can tell who it is, just because I've read so many of their answers--not always, but at least I can tell when I'm in synch with someone! I think there could be in the future some interesting extensions using this, but for now, it's just part of the atmosphere.

There are parallels from physical-space life. Mahalo friends have developed some commonality, even if its as little as "Wow. That was a good answer. That's the kind of people I want to know in this community" to having enough interaction that humor can be shared (not easy in a print-only format. Downright dangerous, sometimes). On Mahalo, it can mean someone spent a few hours figuring out how to make the @*^K! link to "add as friend" work, which is a very nice gesture.
