I believe there will come a day that it will all be purple, yet it's hard to see a day when the top 100 are all black belts. I believe belt levels are just a matter of effort, which I realize how hard it takes to become a brown belt. I do not believe there should be all black belts in the top 100. I'm just curious to see what a 4th degree black belt looks like, and if you even thought about that. Is it a black belt with a number 4 on it? Do you think there will ever be a 4th degree black belt? Why isn't there a blue belt or a red belt?

However, I've come to see the belt levels as a function of account activity rather than the respect given to belts in other disciplines.
To know who's good, I'll look at their Best Answer ratio and also their Tips Received to Points Accumulated ratio if I'm really interested.
I think that those numbers reflect good answers over someone trying to move into the top members list by gaming the system. I don't think that a lot of folks are doing this... but it's interesting to follow the folks who consistently put a lot of thought into their questions. I've already learned things by reading their answers.

UPDATE: Did you notice the top 100 is about to be 100% green belt and above? How soon before it's all purple?
We only have six yellow belts in the top 100, and we now have 17 purple belts. How soon before the top 100 are all Green, and how soon before the top 100 is 100% purple?

Great point! I've been telling Jason that it's great he's making top levels challenging to get to, but he should add more belts (blue, red) so that it encourages us to push harder and level up more!

Personally, I think the 4th level black should be a black belt with 4 yellow stars :D

Yes, what is being measured is:
Length of membership * Avg level of daily activity * Points per unit of activity
Only the third term is really much to do with quality of contribution. Even then, it makes a difference if people's philosophy is to chip in with whatever helpful info they have, concentrate on questions with big tips, etc.
Best to take it all as a bit of fun probably.

I'm about to change belts - I think today. I don't know if I can devote any more time during the day to Mahalo, though. My current goal is 25 points per day. I may switch that goal to something like "10 questions answered, 10 undecided voted on" or something like that. That might rack up points faster. We'll see....But I'm having a good time!
