I think it should be automatic - or perhaps the belt level tests should be a private affair rather than posting all of the info in questions for all to see.
I don't want to get to my brown belt test, have it all made public and have people wishing me luck and then find out that I haven't passed.

The brown belt opens up a lot of editorial abilities and we can't afford to give these abilities to every user who reaches 8000 points. We do this to avoid vandalism, abuse and future problems on Mahalo.
We also use the test to highlight quality users and provide them with a moment in the spotlight, we don't hold tests for users who don't pass.

• I think it should be automatic. I hear apprehension in the voices of purple with brown tip. A hard shin to the midsection can knock the wind out. I feel like there is favoritism in the system. For example, some members have over 500 pages they manage and others have less than 20. Mahalo is deciding, by the rank advancement, who will make money and who won't.

Brown Belts are not automated specifically because we use the Brown Belt as an opportunity to monitor users accounts and activity to see if they are ready for advancement in the Mahalo system. This has been the norm within the Mahalo Community since we started in December 2008.
