It seems a bit of an oxymoron to have something called "schedule maintenance" without actually posting some kind of schedule of the maintenance or allowing users to know when this is happening in order to prepare for it. Users generally do not know when maintenance is needed. If there is no information on the site to let them know, and this causes loss of work; then every one suffers.
For example, every World of Warcraft player knows that Tuesdays are patch days. These patches generally happen very early in the morning until mid morning/early afternoon. This is during low volume time when the least number of players (in theory) are affected. We expect them and prepare for them. There is no surprise, even when the patches go badly and the servers don't come up until the evening.
I would like to suggest not only having a regularly scheduled maintenance period during the week during low volume times (if that is possible) but also some kind of warning for users should some kind of emergency maintenance be needed so that they do not log on to work and find that their time has been wasted.

One day I was working on a task and trying to gather related links as well as inlinks. However, I kept getting frustrated by all the timeouts and bad connection errors. The kicker was that I wouldn't have time to come back to the project that day, and the 72 hours was running out. I really could have pulled my hair out. Suffice it to say, I learned later that day that scheduled maintenance happened during that time.
I was pretty shocked that there wasn't a post on the site or an email of warning. If there were, I would have surely made different plans for that task. So, I really think they should send an email notice when the website will be down for planned maintenance.

it's all about the customer service. Keep new and old people happy, we return. New people are the ones more likely to get more frustrated if we have a ton of issues in one day and end up leaving and not returning.

Usually when I am answering questions now, I just make sure and back up my answer in wordpad before hitting the submit button just in case.
It is frustrating though when we get timeouts or errors and there is no indication on the site that scheduled maintenance in being done at that time and to expect some problems.
Putting up a notice would also lighten the load when maintenance is being done as some would simply choose to leave and come back to the site at a later time. This may even improve the service for those that choose to stay during maintenance time.

That would be very helpful, and considerate!
In the past, what I did is check twitter to find out if Mahalo was up or down. But this is not the best solution, since the post may not be someone working behind the scenes at Mahalo.

Should Mahalo alert it members of schedule maintenance being done on the site?
Or should Mahalo conduct site maintenance only on specific days during certain hours of the day?
Since i have join Mahalo there where times when the site perform schedule maintenance especially during the day i find it to be quite frustrating due to the fact you would answer a question and sometimes it would not register.
Should Mahalo notify it members before maintenance is perform on the site?

Yes!! If it's minor backside stuff, just put up a notice about possible technical issues. if there's a full blown OMGWTFBBQ problem going down, warn the users. it's all about the customer service. Keep new and old people happy, we return. New people are the ones more likely to get more frustrated if we have a ton of issues in one day and end up leaving and not returning.

Yes, it would be helpful if a notice of maintenance or problems being experienced on the site be placed on the front page. It doesn't have to be a long / big notice. Just one line. Usually when I am answering questions now, I just make sure and back up my answer in wordpad before hitting the submit button just in case.

I would like Mahalo to have a "status" page, that gives the actual up to the minute status of Mahalo. This page would not crash, even if Mahalo did. And it would also contain information as to the next update, and expected amount of time the outage might be. That would be very helpful, and considerate!

I like the idea of an uncrashable "status page."

I asked this related question earlier:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-community/did-someone-hack-or-break-into-mahalo-this-morning-i-got-the-message-it-works-when-i-tried-accessing-the-site-earlier-today
When I logged into Mahalo, it only gave a "It works" message, which was confusing, since actually it was down according to twitter. I would much prefer an uncrashable "status" page with a clear understandable message.
